Hello everyone, I am currently planning to equip my Kallax shelving unit from IKEA with door handle accessories from IKEA’s range. I have a question: Do these IKEA door handle accessories always fit every Kallax shelving unit, or are there compatibility differences that should be considered? Specifically, I am interested in possible dimensions, mounting methods, and also any differences between various Kallax versions (e.g., different depths or designs). Does anyone have experience or even technical data on this? I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences so I can avoid making the wrong purchase.

Hello Ulrike53, I’m happy to help!

1. Kallax shelves with a depth of 33 cm (13 inches) usually have doors with drill hole heights of about 80 mm (3 inches) from the top or side edge, depending on whether the handle is mounted horizontally or vertically.

2. The drill hole diameter for the handles is typically 5 mm (0.2 inches), and IKEA handle hardware generally uses M4 screws (approximately 4 mm screw diameter).

3. The drill holes for the handles are usually spaced about 128 mm (5 inches) apart for wide handles or about 64 mm (2.5 inches) apart for narrower handles.

4. The length of the screws IKEA provides is generally suited for door thicknesses of 16 mm (0.6 inches). If your doors are a different thickness, longer screws might be necessary.

If you can remove the mounted doors, I recommend measuring the drill holes precisely with calipers or a tape measure to be sure.

Summary: Standard Kallax doors usually fit the handles perfectly. If your door thickness or design varies, you should check whether the screws fit or if you need to get replacements.

Good luck with your remodeling! 🙂

Great tip, thanks!

I also replaced the handles on my Kallax last year, and it was really easy. 🙂 Just screw them in, tighten, and done!

If Ulrike53 is still unsure: It’s definitely worth doing, as it really changes the overall look nicely and makes the shelf much more unique. Just be bold with the project! Good luck!

When I tried to install one of the newer handle bars on my 2-year-old Kallax, it only worked after drilling new holes.

Let’s be honest, IKEA is great, but this highlights their typical weakness: product lines without clear standardization.

Everyone talks about compatibility, but that’s more wishful thinking.

If you plan to use the accessories, be prepared to do some modifications yourself! After all, IKEA wants you to buy new doors rather than just swap the handles. That would actually be smarter for customer loyalty – who likes to redo work?

Nevertheless – if you know your way around some tools, you can manage it.
