Hello everyone, I am currently planning to equip my Kallax shelving unit from IKEA with door handle accessories from IKEA’s range. I have a question: Do these IKEA door handle accessories always fit every Kallax shelving unit, or are there compatibility differences that should be considered? Specifically, I am interested in possible dimensions, mounting methods, and also any differences between various Kallax versions (e.g., different depths or designs). Does anyone have experience or even technical data on this? I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences so I can avoid making the wrong purchase.

Hello Ulrike53, basically, the door handle accessories from IKEA are designed for Kallax units, which generally ensures good compatibility. However, there are different Kallax models with varying depths (for example, 33cm (13 inches) vs. 39cm (15 inches)) and doors that sometimes have different drilling patterns or mounting methods. The handles themselves usually have standardized mounting screws but may not fit some older models or special editions without adjustments. Therefore, it is important to carefully check the product description and the dimensions of both the handles and the specific Kallax cabinet door model before purchasing. Additionally, the handle’s depth and width should be matched to the door size, otherwise, it may look visually unbalanced. For maximum safety, I recommend reading the assembly instructions carefully and, if necessary, contacting IKEA directly to ask for exact measurements.

Exactly that! 🤔 When I wanted to install one of the newer handle bars on my 2-year-old Kallax, it only worked after drilling new holes. You can hardly see it, but it was annoying. 😊

My advice: If the handles aren’t crucial to the design, measure carefully beforehand and consider using small wooden shims as spacers or for reinforcement. This gives you more flexibility and ensures the handle fits securely! Overall, it usually works out, but you need to be adaptable.

In short: No, not always. Handles from IKEA usually fit current Kallax doors, but measurements can vary with older or special models. Measure first, then check for handle tolerance.

That’s a very valid question! I encountered this issue several times during the renovation of my apartment because Kallax shelves have been produced in varying depths and designs. The standard Kallax units, meaning the regular 33 cm (13 inches) depth, use a specific drilling pattern for the handles with a standardized screw mounting (usually a 4 mm (0.16 inch) hole, with screw spacing around 64 mm (2.5 inches), depending on the handle). However, since about 2017 there have also been Kallax variants with greater depth or modified doors (e.g., glass fronts), where the IKEA handle accessories do not always fit perfectly. Deviations of a few millimeters in the mounting points can cause installation issues or require drilling new holes.

Additionally, it’s important to note that some handle models are designed only for drawers or smaller doors, so these accessories are often not compatible with larger Kallax doors. If you have doors with different fittings (e.g., soft-close hinges), the handle mounting can also differ slightly in technique.

My advice: before purchasing, be sure to measure your doors carefully with a tape measure, and also check the shelf depth. Compare the required screw lengths with the screws supplied with the handles. If you have already chosen a handle style shown in the IKEA catalog, you can also check the product datasheets online. Especially if you are replacing doors or using doors from older sets, proceed with caution. Do you perhaps have a specific Kallax variant you want to mount the handles on?

One small additional question: What is the reason for the retrofitting? Are you aiming for more convenience or just design changes?

Thank you for the detailed response! Yes, my shelf is the classic 33cm (13 inches) depth, but I replaced the doors three years ago (ordered from IKEA back then). The doors are not drawers but the standard Kallax doors. The handles in the current collection look good, but now I am concerned about the drilling holes.

That’s exactly my concern: Is there any reliable information available about the drilling hole positions and screws? I want to avoid unpleasant surprises during installation. In my opinion, the assembly instructions are rather general.

And yes, valerie-tr, it’s mainly about design updates because I find the current handles a bit worn out.
