Hello everyone, I currently have the IKEA KALLAX shelving system and am considering whether the SKUBB storage boxes work well in it. Specifically, I’m interested in whether the boxes fit into the KALLAX compartments, how snugly they sit, and if they can be easily pulled out without getting stuck or wobbling. It would also be helpful to know if the SKUBB boxes, made from lightweight flexible material, provide enough stability when used as a drawer substitute, or if it’s better to use more rigid boxes instead. Has anyone had experience with the SKUBB boxes in the KALLAX shelving unit? Thanks in advance!

I can definitely recommend SKUBB for KALLAX. I have them in a 4-compartment KALLAX, mostly filled with lightweight clothing. Thanks to the lightweight and flexible fabric, they have the advantage of being easy to compress and fold when not in use. The wire frame running around the edges helps them maintain their basic shape. However, if you are looking for firm stability, other KALLAX boxes made of hard plastic or wood are better. But if you value good airflow and lightness, then the SKUBB boxes are absolutely adequate.

It is important to note that SKUBB boxes, due to their fabric material, are not designed to replace drawers but rather serve as flexible storage containers. They fit well in the KALLAX unit, but without rails or guides, so they must be pulled out manually by hand. If you expect a drawer function, you should opt for specialized inserts. The advantage of SKUBB lies in its flexibility and light weight, which is very practical for mobile use and lightweight items.

Thanks for the answers so far, they are really helpful! One more question: Has anyone had experience with the durability of the SKUBB in KALLAX? Does the material last several years without tearing or showing significant signs of wear? How about cleaning—what is it like if you want to wipe or wash the box?

I have been using my SKUBB boxes continuously for about 2 years. They show no cracks or holes, but with heavy use and frequent sliding in and out, there is slight wear on the fabric edges, especially when the boxes are quite full and rub against the corners. The seams remain strong. For cleaning, I wiped them with a damp cloth, which worked well. For more thorough cleaning, you can fully unfold the boxes and gently hand wash them in lukewarm water with mild detergent. Let them dry thoroughly, as the material takes longer to dry completely—I wouldn’t recommend machine washing due to the wire frames in the edges. In summary, the SKUBB boxes last several years with normal use as long as they are not overloaded.

The material is washable and breathable

This is an important point, especially for textiles. Additionally, I recommend not storing the SKUBB in direct sunlight, as the polyester fabric can fade slightly over time. However, for typical indoor use, it is durable enough.

Additionally, if you want the SKUBB boxes to fit as precisely and securely as possible in the KALLAX, you can place a thin, solid base (e.g., a cut-to-size MDF board) inside the bottom of the box. This increases stability when removing the box and prevents sagging, without restricting the flexibility of the sides. I do this with heavier items.
