Hello dear friends of Swedish meatballs 🙂

We installed a LACK wall shelf 110cm (43 inches) above our desk (which I actually have to stand at; for once it’s not from Ikea...). Now, we would like to hang a desk light on the shelf. The desk is actually used for real work, so the lighting should be nice and bright. There is about 50cm (20 inches) of space between the desk and the shelf.

We have already looked at Ledberg or Dioder light strips, the Dioder round lights, or the Grundtal or Inreda spotlights. Some of these (I don’t remember exactly which one, but I think it was GRUNDTAL) have large boxes attached, probably transformers or something similar. That’s definitely not an option here because I wouldn’t be able to hide that with the LACK shelf.

So here’s the question: has anyone done something like this before? My main concern is to get as much light on the desk as possible. A spotlight would be practical since it wouldn’t glare as much on the desk surface...

I’m looking forward to any ideas you might have...
Thanks and best regards

Tobias

Hi,

this isn’t exactly my area of expertise, but since good task lighting is important in the kitchen, I might be able to offer you a few tips. 😀

Ledberg and Dioder, whether round or as strips, are basically just ambient lighting and usually too dim for working for extended periods. I would also advise against Grundtal spotlights or strips for your purpose. They use halogen bulbs, which, as you’ve already noticed, are quite bulky because the transformers are built into the fixture. Additionally, they get quite hot during prolonged use, making them unsuitable for lacquered shelves that are made of thin particleboard with a honeycomb wood core—there’s a risk of fire. You should also consider your hairstyle if you stand directly under these lamps. 😉

Unfortunately, I can’t say much about Inreda, but I seem to remember they’re quite bright and therefore suitable for task lighting. I’d recommend checking out the Rationell LED strips. They are fairly discreet, can be connected in series, come in white and aluminum, and are especially bright without being glaring. They also use LED technology and even have touch controls.

Best regards

Thank you! That already helps a lot. We will give it a try and I will report back if it works!

Thanks and best regards
