Hello everyone, I am currently considering extending my existing Kallax shelf from IKEA to use it as a desk in order to gain more storage and workspace. Has anyone here had experience with a project like this? I am especially interested in tips regarding stability, the best way to attach the extension, and which materials are suitable for enlarging the workspace without compromising the appearance or overloading the support structure. Additionally, I would appreciate any advice on ergonomic design and cable management if you have implemented this. Thanks in advance!
For the extension, I recommend using a plywood or MDF board of the appropriate size. The board should be at least 18 mm (0.7 inches) thick to prevent sagging. Metal brackets or special clamps are suitable for fastening. It is advisable to support the extension with additional shelving units or sturdy legs to ensure adequate load capacity. Ergonomically, a desk height of around 72-75 cm (28-30 inches) is optimal, so the additional board should be adjusted accordingly. Cable management can be neatly arranged using self-adhesive cable ducts or clips attached to the shelf or board.
I really like the idea of extending the desk, especially when space is limited. However, I have experienced firsthand that a lack of stability can be quite frustrating. That’s why I agree: support legs are essential. Especially if you often work with a laptop and rest your arms on the surface, everything needs to be securely in place. At first, I was concerned about how it would look, but with the right tabletop and a bit of paint, it looks very neat.
I would like to offer a critical perspective here. Kallax is basically a shelving system and is not designed to bear table loads. Even if you use a sturdy tabletop and add brackets, the system remains prone to tipping and structural issues, especially when weight is applied at the edges. Has it been considered whether the longer overall length might require a different table frame? In short, functionality should take precedence over optimism. Without additional reinforcements, it could become problematic over time.
