Hello everyone, I want to convert my Ikea Besta cabinet into a mobile storage unit on casters to fit under my desk, and I have a few specific questions. I’m particularly interested in the best way to mount the BESTA on casters so that it remains stable and can be easily rolled under the desk without the wheels being too wobbly or the storage losing stability. I’m considering larger furniture casters that can support a good load capacity and roll as quietly as possible. I would also like to know if I need to disassemble or modify the BESTA beforehand – for example, removing shelves or adding reinforcements. It’s important to me that the modification is as simple as possible and doesn’t require major changes to the furniture’s structure, so I can easily revert to the standard BESTA setup if needed. Has anyone had experience with this kind of DIY caster conversion? Are there common mistakes to watch out for? I’m looking forward to your tips and instructions!

Hello Isakpeo, great question. Since I recently converted a BESTA into a rolling cabinet myself, I’m happy to share my experience. Basically, I would proceed in several steps:

- First, choose the right height for the casters so that the BESTA fits perfectly under your desk while still having enough clearance to roll smoothly.
- I recommend furniture casters with locking brakes and a minimum diameter of 50 mm (2 inches), as smaller casters often get stuck or don’t have enough load capacity.
- Before installing the casters, remove any shelves that might interfere with rolling or make the cabinet unstable.
- It’s best to screw the casters onto the underside of the BESTA at the most stable spot, not just onto the thin base panel. To do this, attach sturdy wooden strips to the base panel to mount the casters on. This greatly increases stability.
- Avoid wobbling by placing the casters exactly under the corners—I mounted them offset to ensure stability.

Common mistakes include:
- Screwing casters directly into thin wood panels without reinforcement, which causes damage.
- Using casters without brakes when the desk is slightly uneven, causing the cabinet to roll away.
- Casters with insufficient load capacity for a fully loaded BESTA.

If you like, I can create a simple sketch with recommended measurements. Just let me know!

Hey Isakpeo! That sounds like a really cool project! 😀 A few months ago, I converted my BESTA to be on casters, and it worked out great. It was important for me to choose casters with soft rubber wheels so the cabinet rolls quietly and doesn’t scratch the floor. I also placed a small wooden board underneath to securely attach the casters. This makes the cabinet even more stable! Go for it, it’s not that difficult and the result is super practical. I hope you manage it just as well! If you have any questions, just get in touch! Wishing you lots of success 🙂

It is best to use furniture casters with locking brakes, attached directly to the sturdy underside. Remove or adjust the shelves beforehand. Casters should have a diameter of at least 50mm (2 inches); otherwise, they tend to get stuck quickly.

Exactly. I would like to add that the stability of the BESTA unit unfortunately depends heavily on the original construction. It makes sense to check the screw connections before the modification and reinforce them if necessary, as the additional load from the casters can cause the frame to twist slightly. This is especially true if there are many or heavy internal components. A small tip: if you don’t want to use extra wooden strips, you can also screw thick, sturdy MDF panels from underneath to create a better surface for the casters to rest on.

Thanks for your previous answers! I’m currently considering whether I should use plywood instead of MDF specifically for reinforcing the underside, since plywood is much stronger and more durable. Does anyone have experience with the material properties in relation to furniture carcasses? The plywood wouldn’t need to be very thick to avoid adding too much height. I want to raise the BESTA only slightly but still provide a solid base to securely screw in the casters. Another question is whether the screws might cause damage to the carcass or other components behind the underside when attaching the casters. How do you handle this? Pre-drilling? I want to avoid damaging the cabinet.
