ᐅ Design question – vinyl flooring and baseboard in the bathroom

Hello everyone,

we recently chose the vinyl flooring for our bathroom. I have heard that in wet rooms, baseboards should not be omitted if there is a gap between the wall and the floor. That makes sense.

The baseboard is usually made from the wall tiles. Since we won’t be tiling all the walls, I wonder how it will look if a concrete-gray baseboard meets a mid-oak tone floor, with white walls above.

How does that look? Has anyone done something similar and could share a photo?

Thanks in advance.

Why use a molding at all? Just seal the joint with acrylic.

Ah, I didn’t pay much attention to the headline.

The issue is definitely more than just appearance. We need a watertight joint between the wall and the floor. A tile baseboard sealed with silicone works. Acrylic does not. It is not water-resistant, stretchable, or adhesive enough. A pure silicone joint would also work. Even better is one made of MS polymer. It adheres stronger, is more flexible, watertight, and paintable. It is more expensive and harder to apply. What makes sense visually, decide for yourself by holding it up. Karsten

Why does it have to be waterproof? Tiles aren't waterproof either.

Of course. Why else would showers and similar areas be tiled?

Appearance, slip resistance, cleanability.
Tiles are water-repellent at best; the joint is the limit. Watertightness is ensured by the substructure.
