Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into bathtubs. I have read a lot of great things about acrylic tubs in terms of warmth, durability, variety of shapes, and other advantages. 🙄 Steel enamel tubs are apparently more durable but noticeably “colder” and “harder.” Could you share your experiences? What did you choose to install?

Best regards

I have an acrylic tub, and I have to say it is completely sufficient, especially when it comes to thermal insulation. I used to have a steel tub, and the water would get cold very quickly, which is frustrating when you want to sit in the tub for a while.

With acrylic, you need to add less hot water, which over time should also be noticeable because you pay less for water and heating costs.

I have the same feeling with our current bathtub. It always needs fresh water added. How sensitive is the material? Any experience with that? Is it safe to use abrasive cleaners on it?

Well, abrasive cleaners are not ideal for either type of bathtub; it’s best to clean the tub with regular cleaning products. I personally use only shampoo and a brush for cleaning.

Regarding heat retention, an acrylic tub obviously keeps the heat much better than enamel. The downside is that you need to avoid scratches, and after a few years, the tub becomes more dull and rough. I’m not sure if different cleaning methods or treatments can improve this or help reseal the surface. However, I can imagine something like a nano-sealing treatment might be possible.

Abrasive cleaners should definitely be avoided, as the small particles can cause scratches on acrylic surfaces, similar to sand. For limescale, it is better to use vinegar or lemon juice. Lemon juice naturally has a much more pleasant scent. Use soft sponges or white paper towels for cleaning. This protects the surface.

I have an acrylic bathtub and am very satisfied with it. After bathing, I simply wipe it down with a cloth, without using any cleaning agents. I also use a bit of lemon juice.
