ConnyJash18 Aug 2022 20:39Hello everyone,
During the planning of our semi-detached house, we decided on a concrete staircase that we would like to clad with wood. Our inspiration was the staircase of our neighbor, whose semi-detached house was completed about a year ago.
Our idea is as follows:
About a year ago, I budgeted approximately €7,000 for both staircases (materials and installation). This estimate was based on the invoice from our neighbors, who paid about €5,000 at the time. Originally, we wanted to hire the same staircase builder. However, he retired a few months ago, so I am now looking for an alternative. Initial rough estimates from local tradespeople have shown me that this price seems unrealistic. For example, we have received preliminary quotes from two regional contractors. While the first estimate was around €10,000 for beech wood, the second quoted a range of €15,000 to €20,000 (net) for beech. Additionally, there is an offer from a national supplier who manufactures their staircases in Poland, with a price of about €8,500 (net) for ash. All offers include delivery and installation. I expect to receive the exact quotes in 1-2 weeks.
I have little to no knowledge in this area, so I am asking for your advice 🙂
1. What should I consider when cladding a concrete staircase? What criteria should I use to choose the supplier?
2. What should I pay attention to when comparing offers?
3. Is the quality of a staircase from a local craftsman comparable to one made in Poland?
4. Do you have experience with costs and workmanship? What is a realistic price for such a project?
5. Is there anything else I should keep in mind?
Best regards

During the planning of our semi-detached house, we decided on a concrete staircase that we would like to clad with wood. Our inspiration was the staircase of our neighbor, whose semi-detached house was completed about a year ago.
Our idea is as follows:
- Solid oak tread (40mm (1.6 inches)) laminated in blocks with an overhang
- Riser painted white, for example made of beech (20mm (0.8 inches))

Badener197018 Aug 2022 21:34I offer a version made of oak with white risers for a gross price of about 16,600 euros, carried out by a local company registered in the craftsmen’s register, training apprentices, paying taxes in Germany, and providing jobs for people in the region. Poland? It might work well, but I wouldn’t dare. Why use beech or ash wood when oak is desired???

Benutzer 100118 Aug 2022 21:41I am quite surprised—16,000 euros gross not for a whole new staircase but only for the cladding? How many hours of work does that amount to?

How many hours of work does that involve? Covering a concrete staircase to make it look like wood is really doubling the effort, basically nonsense, but the damage is already done... 🙄 For the same price, you could get two wooden staircases with railings... Oak has become about 50 percent more expensive since November...
I recently received my stair treads.
17 steps made of rustic oak laminated wood, 44mm (1.7 inches) thick, width between 1 and 1.25m (3.3 and 4.1 feet).
Risers in matte white made from 30x120cm (11.8x47.2 inches) wall tiles.
I found the price of 2300 net for the 17 steps quite steep. They were manufactured in Poland; so far, I have nothing negative to say.
Edit: Measurements were taken by the company, installation done by EL.

ConnyJash19 Aug 2022 08:45@Badener1970: Is your price for 2 staircases, or would it need to be doubled? Could you maybe provide some information about the costs for materials and labor? That would help me assess things better, and perhaps you could share some tips on what to watch out for when dealing with suppliers. Otherwise, we have had an offer for ash wood because oak is probably beyond our budget.
@TmMike_2: Which manufacturer did you have your stair treads made by? Does the manufacturer possibly offer installation as well? Could you also share a picture of your staircase?
I have also seen that you can order pre-made stair treads online. The prices there are noticeably lower. For example, a beech tread (block-glued) costs about 70cm (27.5 inches), and oak about 160cm (63 inches). However, the riser probably needs to be added as well.
