Hello everyone,

I am considering using the Ikea Pax wardrobe as a shoe cabinet since I currently don’t have enough space for a separate shoe storage unit, and the Pax would be placed in my hallway. My question is: can the Ikea Pax also serve as a shoe cabinet if modified accordingly?

I am particularly interested in how suitable the individual shelves or shoe pull-outs are, whether the ventilation is sufficient to prevent unpleasant odors, and how stable the structure is with a higher weight of shoes, especially boots and heavy winter footwear.

Has anyone had experience with whether the wardrobe really works well for shoes—perhaps with tips on interior fittings, special dividers, or useful accessories from the Ikea range?

Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

That’s a very interesting and practical question. Basically, the Pax wardrobe is flexible thanks to its modular interior, which can be customized individually. For shoes, it is essential that the shelves are sturdy and that there is adequate ventilation.

Technically, the Pax shelves are rated for a load of about 25 kg (55 lbs), which is sufficient for most shoes. However, especially heavy boots or many pairs of shoes on one shelf can quickly exceed that weight. In this case, I would recommend using the shoe pull-outs, which are designed specifically for shoes and have a higher load capacity. They also make access easier.

Regarding ventilation: By default, Pax wardrobes are quite enclosed. If you pay attention to rear ventilation when positioning it, for example by leaving some space from the wall and keeping the doors open occasionally, that can help reduce odors. If possible, you could also experiment with ventilation grilles—although Ikea does not offer a standardized solution for this.

As a tip: flat storage boxes or shoe boxes (e.g. made of clear plastic) that can be stacked are suitable for the interior if the shelves do not offer enough flexibility.

Finally, it’s worth carefully planning the height of each compartment, since shoes vary in height. Otherwise, you risk losing storage space. If you like, I’m happy to share more about individual planning. What types of shoes do you mainly want to store?

A practical approach is to store heavy shoes in lower compartments at the back and place the shoes you wear most often on pull-outs at the front for easy access.

This is an important point. Lack of air circulation can indeed lead to moisture buildup, especially if shoes are stored while still slightly damp or dirty. I recommend placing the wardrobe in a well-ventilated area or ensuring regular fresh air supply.

I would also point out that Ikea offers special shoe components designed specifically for the Pax system. These are generally more durable and allow for better organization.

One more technical aspect: The metal frames in the drawers are sturdy, but care should be taken not to overload them to avoid wear. Installation should be precise and aligned so that hinges and drawers continue to function smoothly over time.

Conclusion: The Pax wardrobe is suitable for occasional shoe storage, but if you want to store many pairs or bulky models, you should carefully plan the interior and ensure regular ventilation.

To be honest, I find the question almost too simple for everyday practical use, but precisely because of that, it’s quite nice!

Of course, the Pax can be used as a shoe cabinet – after all, it is a flexible wardrobe system. However, you should be aware that Ikea does not specifically produce footwear furniture, and with the Pax, many things are improvised, especially regarding ventilation and moisture management.

Why not just buy a shoe cabinet that is truly designed for shoes? These cabinets are breathable, often feature specialized compartments, and save space.

But clearly, the versatility of the Pax offers room for creativity, and the storage capacity is huge. My provocative theory: just because something is possible doesn’t always mean it is the best solution.

It might even be that you end up spending more time organizing than with a straightforward solution – that is, a purpose-designed shoe rack.

So if you want to use the Pax as a shoe cabinet, you should carefully assess your personal needs: number of shoes, space requirements, ventilation, and accessibility. And, frankly, with a piece of furniture at Ikea prices, improvisation is part of the deal.

I’m curious how you store your shoes and whether you mostly have everyday shoes, sports shoes, or heavy boots – because that makes a big difference when using the Pax.
