Hello everyone, I am currently planning to purchase several IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets and already have a pretty clear design concept. However, I am wondering if it is possible to use handles on the Metod cabinets that are not from IKEA. Specifically, I am interested in the following:

- Are there any specific technical requirements for handle installation on Metod, such as hole spacing or screw size?
- Are other handles compatible without modifications, or will I need to drill new holes?
- How does using custom/larger or smaller handles affect the stability and appearance?

I would prefer not to use the original IKEA handles, as I want to create a more personalized look. Does anyone have experience with this or technical advice on what to consider? Thanks in advance!

In addition to the previous posts:

- Even installing IKEA handles requires some care, as the door fronts are made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with a foil coating.
- When drilling new holes, make sure they are not too close to the edge of the door, as this can compromise stability.
- Some users drill from the back using a Forstner bit to avoid tearing the material. Although this takes more effort, it results in better quality.
- If you are installing very heavy or large handles, check the screws and hinges for load capacity and consider adjusting the door hinges later as a precaution.

If your doors are painted, applying a clear varnish around the drilled holes can help protect against moisture.

In the end, with proper care, replacing the handles is entirely straightforward and allows for more individuality in your kitchen design.

From my own experience: I fitted Metod doors with custom stainless steel handles.

It was important for me that the screws were the correct length (not too short, not too long) and that the hole spacing was measured precisely.

For the handles, I made sure the spacing was 160 mm (6.3 inches), so I could use the existing holes.

I avoided drilling new holes because I didn’t want to deal with corrections afterward.

So retrofitting handles is definitely possible, but you should measure carefully beforehand and use high-quality screws.

Summary of facts regarding handle compatibility with IKEA Metod:

- Hole spacing is the most important measurement: the standard sizes are 128 mm and 160 mm (5 inches and 6.3 inches), depending on the door size.
- Other handles must either fit these measurements or the doors need to be redrilled.
- The screw size is M4, with the length adjustable according to the handle depth.
- Drill holes must be clean and perpendicular, with pre-drilling and protective measures (painter’s tape) to avoid splintering.
- The thickness and material of the door affect load capacity: very heavy handles should be installed with suitable materials.

Installation of other handles is therefore generally possible and technically straightforward, as long as these points are considered.

Visually, you can customize individually; just pay attention to harmonious proportions and load factors.

In short: Other handles fit very well if the hole spacing matches.

Otherwise, carefully drill the hole.

Nothing else to consider.

I can confirm that other handles can be installed without any problems.

Just pay attention to the hole spacing and screw length, and be careful when drilling new holes.

I have personally used handles from a different manufacturer, and it worked perfectly.

Thanks to everyone for the detailed posts and valuable tips! I now feel well prepared to choose and install my own handles.

I will be very precise when measuring and careful when drilling to avoid damaging the doors.

If I have any further questions, I will reach out here again. Until then, thanks once more to everyone!
