Hello everyone, I’m currently working on an IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet and facing the challenge of properly installing the cabinet doors with recessed handles.

My specific question: How do I mount the doors with recessed handles so that they close precisely, have no gaps, and the handles are perfectly aligned?

I have already attached the hinges and roughly positioned the doors, but I’m struggling with the fine adjustments, especially aligning the recessed handles properly, since the edges need to fit cleanly.

Is there a particular sequence or procedure I should follow? What should I pay special attention to during installation in order to achieve a consistent and durable result?

Thanks in advance for your tips!

First, always adjust the hinges correctly to ensure precise door alignment. Then check if the recessed handles sit flush. If gaps appear, readjust the screws on the hinges. After that, align the doors using a spirit level.

Hello, I can completely understand that precise installation of Metod doors with recessed handles can be a bit tricky at first. The most important thing is to first attach the hinges correctly and perform the initial adjustment.

Make sure that the screws in the hinges are neither too tight nor too loose, so that fine-tuning is possible. The alignment of the doors is then adjusted using the adjustment screws on the hinges:

- Horizontal offset regulates the lateral spacing of the doors
- Depth adjustment ensures flush fitting with the cabinet body
- Vertical adjustment sets the height

Regarding the recessed handles, it’s best to place the door on a flat surface to secure it and avoid inaccuracies. The rebate edges of the doors should overlap cleanly so that the recessed handles fit flush.

If you like, I can also provide you with a step-by-step guide.

That sounds like good advice. I wonder if some doors or components from IKEA might be slightly warped themselves? Could that be the reason if the recessed handles don’t sit perfectly flush? The doors don’t appear warped from the outside.

Is there a way to check this more precisely or fix it without having to replace the entire door?

The likelihood of an IKEA Metod door being warped is low but not impossible. Especially with handle-less doors, stresses can develop during transport or storage that cause visible unevenness.

I recommend the following approach:

- Place the door on a completely flat surface (for example, a large table or the floor checked with a spirit level).
- Measure the flatness of the door front at various points, particularly around the handle recesses, using a caliper or ruler.
- Check the door edges for warping.

If the door does not lie flat here, only very limited correction is possible. Minor deviations can sometimes be compensated for by applying targeted pressure when adjusting the hinges during installation, but larger distortions are difficult to fix as this would compromise the door’s stability.

An alternative is to contact IKEA customer service about such cases, as they often offer at least an exchange or replacement.

A tip for installation: Attach the door fully to the cabinet carcass and adjust the hinges multiple times before closely inspecting the handle recesses. This way, you can ensure the gaps are consistent and then check the handles, which depend on the final position of the door.

Great topic, and congratulations on already getting so familiar with the Metod door mechanism! That is truly the key to a perfect result! 🙂

From my experience, the recessed handles can sometimes feel a bit “unreal” at first because they aren’t traditional handles but rather an indentation in the door. However, when everything is properly aligned, it looks incredibly clean and elegant!

My advice: Use the adjustment options on the hinges in small increments and keep checking the distances with a tape measure. Especially with recessed handles, alignment is very important since your hand needs to fit precisely into the recess without the edge getting in the way.

And please don’t get discouraged if it’s not perfect on the first try—patience pays off! Good luck!
