ᐅ Is it possible to retrofit Pax wardrobes with sliding doors?

Klalo41Hello everyone, I have a question about retrofitting IKEA Pax wardrobes. Specifically, I have a classic Pax wardrobe with hinged doors, but I would like to convert it to sliding doors. I’m wondering if this is technically feasible, especially since the wardrobe was not originally designed for sliding doors. Are there special conversion kits or experience on how to fit sliding doors to Pax wardrobes afterward? I am particularly interested in whether the sliding mechanism can be easily installed and what to watch out for regarding stability and installation. Maybe someone has done this already or knows of solutions to convert without replacing the wardrobe frame. Thanks in advance!

I wonder if this is technically feasible, especially since the wardrobe was not originally designed for sliding doors. This is basically possible, but with some limitations: IKEA does not offer an official retrofit system for sliding doors on Pax wardrobes that were originally designed with hinged doors. This is because the side panels, as well as the running and guide rails required for sliding doors, are not included by default in the hinged door version.
Possible options include:
- Replacing the side panels with special panels that have integrated running rails (usually only available for newer models or as part of range expansions)
- Attaching separate rails to the outer edges, which can affect the appearance and slightly increase the wardrobe’s width
Regarding stability: Sliding doors exert different forces on the frame, so the wardrobe should be securely fixed to the wall. Installation should be done with the appropriate tools and precise measurements, as the doors typically weigh more than hinged doors.
In summary: There is no official, simple “plug & play” solution. The conversion requires either purchasing sliding door panels and related accessories or using third-party components or custom solutions. Retrofitting existing hinged-door Pax wardrobe bodies is hardly possible without compromises and some DIY skills.
Hey Klalo41, great question! I retrofitted my Pax wardrobe with sliding doors and I’m really happy with it! 🙂 Of course, there are no official retrofit kits from IKEA, but with a bit of creativity and some rails bought at the hardware store, it works perfectly.
Exactly! It’s important to always firmly attach the wardrobe and align the rails precisely, otherwise the doors will jam. I also screwed aluminum profiles onto the carcasses as guide rails – works great!
Just a tip: Pay attention to the door weight and don’t let the doors get too heavy. Also, keep in mind that the wardrobe with sliding doors may stand about 5 cm (2 inches) deeper because the rails need space.
If you feel like it – just give it a try. The result looks really stylish and saves a lot of room! Good luck! 😊

Pay attention to the door weight and avoid making the doors too heavy. This is an important point. You should also check whether the height and width of your doors fit the tracks.
My advice: sliding door systems are also available as universal kits that can be adapted. Installation takes time and some patience.
If you don’t want to deal with the renovation yourself, consider whether getting a new Pax unit with sliding doors might be worth it – this is often easier.
