Hello everyone, I have a question that’s been on my mind for a while: Is it possible to retrofit the IKEA Pax wardrobe system with soft-close drawers?

I’m considering upgrading my existing Pax setup because the drawers slamming shut without damping annoys me, especially when several drawers are used next to each other. Specifically, my questions are:

- Are there original soft-close parts from IKEA that can be easily retrofitted, or are compatible third-party components worth considering as well?
- What should be taken into account during installation?
- And could the system’s stability or functionality be affected by adding these upgrades?

Has anyone had experience with this? I prefer to optimize the existing drawers rather than buying completely new ones. Thanks in advance for your help!

Why not simply replace the drawers completely and avoid these half measures?

I have definitely considered that, but for me, the effort involved is also a factor. I have several cabinets with partly very customized drawer sizes, so buying new ones would be expensive and time-consuming to install.

Therefore, my primary goal is to improve the ventilation of the existing drawers, specifically to reduce the “slamming” without having to replace everything.

I would recommend measuring the existing running rails first and then looking for suitable soft-close adapter parts.

That sounds reasonable. Does anyone know where to find products specifically designed to be compatible with Pax? I want to avoid making a wrong purchase.

Hey @irvin47 – I tried out some soft-close retrofit kits, and they’re really a good alternative if you don’t want to rebuild everything from scratch.

Sure, it’s not 100% Ikea “original,” but most parts are quite compatible with a little thought.

By the way, I have a few tips for you:

- Check the dimensions of the runners carefully in retrofit kits, ideally measure them on-site.
- You can install them alone, but it requires some patience.
- The dampers are usually more concealed than you’d expect, so they don’t interfere with the design.

I totally get that. For example, I’ve looked for products from online retailers that explicitly say they’re Pax-compatible. The quality is sometimes better than cheap alternatives — it’s worth the investment.

And honestly – not every supplier is as laid-back as Ikea, but for the Pax drawers, the selection is pretty good if you look around!

Of course, it’s not a high-end system, but it’s a noticeable upgrade compared to standard drawers.
