Hello everyone,

I am planning to build an extension for my KALLAX shelving unit myself because I find the standard extensions too expensive and would prefer something tailored to my individual needs. Specifically, I am looking for instructions or experiences on the best way to create such an extension – including material selection, construction, and attachment to the shelving unit.

I want the extension to be sturdy, not too heavy, and visually compatible with the KALLAX. It would also be interesting to know if anyone has experience with custom-built extensions for doors or drawers, as I have some questions about those as well.

Are there any proven step-by-step guides or tips on what to watch out for during construction? Thanks in advance!

Is there a particularly simple design for a sturdy top section...?

I recommend a simple box shape made from MDF panels, which you just need to cut and screw together. Avoid drawers or doors, as they require more effort.

Attach the top section to the KALLAX using brackets – this is very stable and easy to implement.

You can pre-drill the MDF boards before assembly to reduce the risk of the wood splitting. Use countersunk screws; the surface can also be covered with caps.

That is very important, thank you for pointing that out.

Additionally: If you are planning doors or drawers, be sure to precisely align the hinges or drawer slides. It is worth using a spirit level and stop blocks during installation to avoid gaps and misalignments.

If you want to build drawers, check before purchasing the drawer slides whether they fit the internal dimensions and what their weight capacity is.

Your jigsaw and cordless drill set is sufficient for simple constructions. The important thing is to work patiently and step by step, even if that makes the building process take longer.

If the look is important to you: You can also add thin strips as trim to enhance the edges of the MDF. This makes it look more homely and increases stability at the corners. Strips can be easily fixed with wood glue and small nails.

For doors on the mezzanine, I always use magnetic catches – they are easy to install and hold very well. Standard hinges are fine, but magnetic catches provide extra security to keep the door from opening unintentionally.
