Hello everyone, I am planning to build a kitchen island using the IKEA Metod system, which will serve not only as a cooking and work surface but also provide multifunctional storage space. My question is: What modular options and combinations are available to optimize storage efficiency in a Metod island, especially regarding various drawer types, internal organizers, and possible special features such as foldable countertops or integrated waste sorting? I have some experience with kitchen planning but would like to gather as many practical tips as possible to avoid purchases that don’t fit my needs or waste space. Thanks in advance for your expertise!

I understand, full-extension drawer slides are therefore highly recommended?

The preference for full-extension slides makes sense in theory; however, it is important not to lose sight of the cost-benefit ratio. Metod often relies on standard slides that are quite durable. Whether soft-close technology justifies the additional cost depends on how frequently the drawers are used.

Are drawers with specially shaped knife inserts available in the Metod range?

IKEA does not offer dedicated knife blocks for drawers, but the VARIERA inserts can be repurposed for this use. Alternatively, professional inserts with precise slots for knives can be obtained from third-party suppliers in the same dimensions. For safety reasons, I also recommend always storing knives separately in a well-padded drawer.

What about the maximum load capacity?

The load capacity of Metod drawer slides usually ranges between 15 and 25 kg (33–55 lbs), depending on the type of slide. For kitchen appliances, it is better not to rely solely on the drawer but to ensure the countertop is securely mounted and to place appliances on the countertop rather than inside the drawer.

In summary: A combination of full-extension slides with soft-close function and sturdy countertops meets most requirements but involves additional costs. Each user should consider this based on their usage habits.

Waste sorting in Metod islands makes the most sense with the VARIERA series in the sink cabinet or base cabinet.

Knives are best stored in a dedicated insert or knife block that stands separately in the cabinet if there is no drawer organizer available.

Soft-close is convenient but not essential.

I completely agree! Still, especially if you occasionally use heavier appliances as described, soft-close is definitely worth it just for the ease of use. I have it on my own island and it simply feels more premium.

Regarding knives: I have a VARIERA wooden knife holder—it takes a bit of effort but isn’t very expensive and protects both the blades and fingers really well. Alternatively, I have also seen custom foam inserts with cutouts that are made to measure.

One more tip: Plan for power outlets on the side of your island as well, so you can easily plug in your kitchen machines without having to move them around all the time. This keeps your work surface clear and lets you make full use of the island!
