Hello everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Metod kitchen drawers: they squeak every time they move, whether pulled gently or more firmly. It’s quite annoying, especially because it’s very loud and still persists after several weeks. I suspect it has to do with the sliding rails, but I’m not sure what the best and most permanent solution is. Does anyone know a good method to get rid of these squeaking noises? Should I use lubricants, remove the sliding rails, or are there special products from IKEA or third-party suppliers? I would appreciate any tips, especially if they are long-lasting and easy to apply.

A classic approach is to thoroughly clean the sliding tracks and then treat them with a good lubricant.

Thank you, Wesley, your description sounds very practical! Can silicone spray also be applied to the plastic parts, or is it better to use it only on metal? And: Is it best to completely remove the drawer for cleaning, or can it be done effectively without removing it?

Only spray the metal parts; do not use silicone on plastic, as it can cause smearing. It is recommended to remove the drawer, making cleaning and lubricating easier.

It’s better to apply it only to metal parts to keep everything clean. And yes, removing the drawer is easier, but if you’re careful, you can pull it out halfway and clean it that way — just a bit more inconvenient. Remember to open and close the drawer several times after spraying; this helps distribute the spray evenly and makes the squeaking stop faster.

I also tried using a few drops of sewing machine oil on my Metod drawers because I was out of silicone spray – but it wasn’t really effective and unfortunately attracted dust. Since I went back to using silicone, everything has been working smoothly. The key is not to use too much, otherwise it gets greasy. 😅

Maybe it would be worth checking if stable replacement rails from other manufacturers are available that run quieter in the long term.

Interesting point, theo63! Does anyone have experience with alternative runners compatible with IKEA Metod? Are there any recommendations for durable or noise-reducing models?

Alternative rails are often not 100% compatible. IKEA-specific features, such as drill holes, do not always match. If squeaking occurs, it is better to try cleaning and silicone lubrication before opting for replacement.
