Hello everyone,

I have a BILLY bookshelf from IKEA at home that I would like to level on an uneven floor. I have noticed that the floor has some slight holes or depressions in certain areas, which make the shelf a bit unstable or cause it to not stand evenly.

My question is: What are the best and most practical methods to ensure the stability and leveling of a BILLY bookshelf when the floor has irregularities like small holes or dips? Which materials or tools would you recommend to safely and permanently stabilize the shelf without it wobbling or tipping over?

I prefer not to make any major structural changes but rather work with aids or small adjustments.

Thank you for your advice!

The recesses are about 5 to 7 mm deep

With 5-7 mm (0.2 to 0.3 inches), it gets a bit more demanding. Felt pads hardly cover that.

The issue with wooden wedges is that they can compress under load, especially if made from softer wood. Therefore, you should opt for harder hardwood wedges and secure them additionally with wood glue to prevent slipping.

Adjustable feet can usually be screwed under the shelf leg, and some models are even recommended by IKEA, such as the "FIXA" furniture feet or similar. These are visually unobtrusive, especially if they match the color of the shelf and fit snugly under the leg.

If you're interested, you can also experiment with a thin plastic sheet or a rigid acrylic plate: this can serve as an intermediate layer cut precisely to size, on which you then place the feet – this makes the support surface more stable.

What does the floor look like overall? Is it a wooden floor? In many cases, gaps can also be levelled using fillers like wood filler or spackling compound.

I find the idea of adjustable feet very interesting, but I wonder how to best do this on the BILLY shelf without affecting its appearance?

Adjustable feet are usually designed to be barely visible, especially if you remove the original shelf feet and attach the new screw-in feet directly. They can be color-matched or combined with furniture glides.

Alternatively, you can use small, self-adhesive leveling pads that come in varying thicknesses. These are discreet and fit well under the feet.

It is important to also secure the shelf to the wall—not only for stability on uneven floors but also as a general safety measure.
