I have an older BILLY shelf unit from IKEA, and the hinges on the doors are now worn out. My question is: which hinges are compatible with the BILLY unit if I can no longer get the original parts or if they are too expensive? Are there any universal replacement hinges that can be used safely without the doors failing to close properly or damaging the shelf? It would be great if someone with experience or research could help me here, especially regarding the correct measurements or the installation method for the hinges. Thank you in advance!

Which hinges are compatible with the BILLY shelf if I can't get the original parts anymore or if they are too expensive? The original BILLY hinges are 35mm (about 1.4 inches) cup hinges with overlay or inset mounting. Replacements from hardware stores with the same dimensions usually fit without issues. Just make sure to check the drilling distances.

Are there universal replacement hinges that can be used without worry, so the doors close properly and the shelf isn’t damaged?Universal hinges are available but should precisely match the dimensions (cup hole diameter 35mm (1.4 inches), depth about 12–13mm (0.5–0.5 inches)) and mounting points of the BILLY shelf. Deviations often cause misalignment or unstable doors. The original hinge models for BILLY, such as those from Hettich, are considered industry standard. It is advisable to check the drilling on the shelf with a caliper before fitting other hinges. With DIY store reproductions, the exact hole geometry and self-adjusting function—important for IKEA hinges—are often missing.
Additionally, the fixing screws should be at least 15mm (0.6 inches) long to ensure secure attachment. There are also different hinge types: overlay, inset, and concealed hinges are not always compatible with each other.
In short: replacement hinges are possible but must have exact measurements and ideally be original or identical models.

A deviation often leads to misalignment or an unstable door.Exactly, that’s the key point. If you have something like the BILLY shelf, it’s less practical to just use a generic hinge without checking the measurements first. You need a hinge that fits the 35mm (1.4 inch) cup size but also offers the adjustment options that IKEA hinges provide, so the door can be properly aligned.

Just watch the drill hole spacing. That really needs to be taken into account. If the holes don’t line up, you either have to drill new ones (which can be tricky with MDF or particleboard) or risk the hinge not sitting securely.
I’d also recommend checking with IKEA for original replacement parts. They’re often not as expensive as you might think. If you want to use something different: hinges from manufacturers like Hettich are usually reliable options because they’re often compatible—but as mentioned, make sure to verify the measurements.
Good luck with the replacement! 🙂
