klaus-bu3127 Dec 2019 08:17Hello everyone,
I recently got a Billy shelf unit from IKEA and noticed that one of the drawers is sticking and no longer slides out smoothly. Specifically, the drawer doesn’t move smoothly along the runners, sometimes catches, and even gets stuck when I try to pull it out completely.
I’ve observed that the drawer runners are in place and don’t appear bent, but the drawer guide seems to be blocked somehow.
My question to you is: What methods are there to fix a sticking Billy shelf drawer? Should I completely remove the runners to clean and lubricate them, or try something else?
I’d appreciate specific advice, especially on what to check first and how to avoid common mistakes. Thanks in advance!

Leonardteo27 Dec 2019 10:24Hello,
first of all, it is important to closely inspect the drawer slides. A drawer in Billy shelves often sticks because small foreign objects or dust are caught in the track, or the rollers are slightly misaligned.
My first tip:
Pull the drawer out completely and check the sides with the slides for any foreign objects. If dirt is present, remove it with a dry cloth.
Secondly:
Check whether the drawer slides are installed correctly – sometimes loosening them slightly and then carefully readjusting can help, as any misalignment may block movement.
For lubrication, I would recommend silicone spray instead of oil for Billy drawers, because it does not attract dust.
These are the main points to check first before removing the drawer slides.

Hello Klaus,
I’d like to add a simple step-by-step guide that might help you:
1. Remove the drawer completely: Pull it out carefully as far as possible, then press the release latches (usually on the sides) up or down so you can take the drawer fully out of the cabinet.
2. Cleaning: Remove dust and small particles from the tracks using a fine brush or a slightly damp cloth. Make sure no moisture remains.
3. Check the rollers: Are the small wheels damaged or blocked by any plastic catches?
4. Lubrication: Use a dry lubricant like silicone spray—never oil-based lubricants to avoid attracting new dirt.
5. Adjustment: Check if the tracks are mounted straight; sometimes a slight screw adjustment is enough.
6. Reassembly: Put the drawer back in, then move it gently back and forth to ensure smooth operation.
Common mistakes to avoid:
- Overloading the drawers or installing them at an angle
- Spraying oil on the tracks
- Using excessive force when pulling out, which can bend the tracks.
Hope this helps! 🙂

I have one more question about lubrication: What is the best way to apply the silicone spray without causing overspray that might dirty the furniture or floor? And how much is actually too much?
Also, I suspect that one of the rails might be slightly bent because the drawer runs unevenly at one corner. What is the best way to check this, and can these rails be straightened easily without much effort?
If anyone has experience with this, I would appreciate specific tips.
Hello Klaus,
I like to go into a bit more detail since I’m familiar with the problem myself and have already repaired several Billy shelves with sticking drawers.
Regarding your question about spray application:
The silicone spray should ideally be applied from about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) away onto the runners or the rollers to avoid droplet buildup and overspray. I also recommend placing a piece of newspaper or cardboard underneath as a splash guard. A light spray is sufficient; afterwards, you can gently spread it with a lint-free cloth to remove any excess spray.
How to identify a bent runner:
If the drawer moves unevenly or sticks, pull it out completely and observe the guide. Look at the runners from different angles of light so you can better detect any deformation. A common spot is the front edge, which often bends if the drawer was pulled out with force.
How to straighten a bent runner:
The best way is to remove the runner—usually held by 2-4 screws. Then carefully bend the deformation back using pliers or a small hammer. Make sure to proceed step by step and regularly check if the runner is straight again. A ruler can be a helpful tool.
Important: Make sure the screws are properly tightened when reattaching, as loose runners can also cause sticking.
Feel free to ask any further questions; I’m happy to help.
