Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought a Billy shelving unit with drawers from IKEA. Now I have the problem that some drawers stick or are difficult to open and close, even though everything seems to be assembled correctly.
My question: Why do some BILLY drawers stick? Are there common causes that make the drawers hard to open and close or require a lot of force?
I would like to understand whether this is due to design issues, assembly errors, or material quality, and if there are simple ways to fix the problem permanently. Do individual parts shift during use, or are the drawers sensitive to moisture?
I’m looking forward to your experiences and advice!

cassandra20 Aug 2020 16:15Buix9, to answer your question in more detail: The Billy drawers often stick due to the tight tolerances when installing the side runners.
These runners are usually made of plastic and run in a groove that allows very little play. This means that even slight irregularities during installation can hinder movement.
Another factor is that the particleboard of the shelf reacts to swelling caused by humidity. This can lead to increased friction, especially in rooms with fluctuating moisture levels.
To fix this, it is worth removing the drawers along with the runners, inspecting the runners for damage, and if necessary, treating them sparingly with oil or wax to improve sliding performance.

Usually, the jamming is caused by misaligned runners. Check the screws and, if necessary, reposition them. This is indeed a common issue. I also recommend checking whether the drawers themselves fit properly.

Maybe it helps to completely remove the drawers, inspect the system, and then carefully realign everything. We can only confirm that. Additionally, avoid using force when opening, as this can further warp the construction in the worst case.
A simple guide:
1. Completely remove the drawer
2. Clean the runner rails and check for damage
3. Loosen all screws and slightly readjust the runner rails
4. Lightly lubricate or wax
5. Reassemble and test
This usually eliminates the jamming issue.
Thank you very much for the many helpful answers and explanations.
Tomorrow, I will start working on the drawers, especially checking the screws on the drawer slides. So far, I haven’t used oil or wax, but the idea of candle wax sounds interesting.
Back to the moisture issue: Do I really need to pay attention to the indoor humidity? My BILLY shelf is located in a well air-conditioned living room, and the sticking only started after some time. Could this possibly be related to aging or wear of the plastic runners?
I look forward to your further insights.

Could this possibly be related to aging or wear of the plastic guides? That’s a good point. Plastic can become more brittle over time or due to stress, which reduces its ability to slide smoothly. The guides may also warp slightly.
If the drawers start sticking after some time, I would suspect some minor wear. Replacing individual guides could help in the long run.
In general, it’s always a good idea to regularly check that screws are tight and to keep the parts clean. Cleaning the tracks and then applying a suitable lubricant might also help.
Good luck with the repair!
