Hello everyone, I recently assembled a Billy bookshelf and noticed some adhesive residues that are difficult to remove in certain areas. My specific question is: What methods or products work best to safely and effectively remove these adhesive residues without damaging the veneer or surface of the Billy bookshelf? I would appreciate recommendations that are effective on both fresh and dried adhesive, and tips that can be easily applied in everyday situations. Thank you in advance!

For removing adhesive residues from Billy shelves made of veneer or painted wood, isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) is recommended. It dissolves many types of adhesives without damaging the material. Application: apply alcohol to a soft cloth, treat the sticky areas, and wipe off immediately. It is important to first test on an inconspicuous spot, as veneer can be sensitive.
Thanks for the tips so far. A quick question: Is there a specific type of adhesive remover you would recommend especially for the thin veneer of the Billy shelf? Some products in drugstores seem quite harsh, so I’m specifically looking for a solution that is gentle on the surface and doesn’t leave any stains.
Hello,
I can confirm that many aggressive solvents can damage the veneer. Therefore, I recommend using solvent-based adhesive removers with caution. Alternatively, a mild cleaner based on orange oil works well to dissolve adhesive residues while protecting the surface. The product must be explicitly labeled as “veneer-friendly.” After use, wipe the area with a damp cloth to avoid any residue.
