Hello everyone! I have been thinking for a while about how to enhance the classic IKEA Billy shelves with color without completely rebuilding them or spending a lot of money. I’m especially interested in which techniques or materials work best to make the surface more lively or personalized without compromising the shelves’ stability or functionality. Maybe someone here has experience with paint, stains, adhesive films, or something similar? I would also like to know if you have tips on how to apply paint layers cleanly and whether certain preparations are necessary depending on whether the shelf is made of wood or particleboard. I’m grateful for any suggestions!
Regarding the topic ‘How to enhance Billy shelves with color,’ here is a simple step-by-step guide:
1. Remove all shelves and, if possible, disassemble the unit.
2. Clean the surface with a mild detergent, such as denatured alcohol or a vinegar-water solution.
3. Sand the surface carefully with 120-grit sandpaper to ensure good paint adhesion.
4. Apply a primer specifically designed for particleboard.
5. After drying, apply water-based acrylic paint in the desired color—preferably 2-3 thin coats.
6. For protection, a matte or satin clear varnish is recommended.
Note: Especially check the back panels in advance to see if they are made of thin particleboard to avoid moisture damage. Follow short drying times and wear a dust mask when sanding. Good luck!

Alternatively, you can choose self-adhesive films that are easy to cut and apply. I think that’s a great tip! I had a nightmare with uneven paint application, which didn’t look good at all. Films may not be quite as customizable, but they offer a quick solution and allow you to combine patterns or colors.

Use masking tape to define geometric shapes or stripes. Great idea! Especially with a simple shelf like this, such details really stand out and give the piece character.Similar topics
