rengabriel8 May 2024 09:13Hello everyone! I have been thinking for a while about how to enhance the classic IKEA Billy shelves with color without completely rebuilding them or spending a lot of money. I’m especially interested in which techniques or materials work best to make the surface more lively or personalized without compromising the shelves’ stability or functionality. Maybe someone here has experience with paint, stains, adhesive films, or something similar? I would also like to know if you have tips on how to apply paint layers cleanly and whether certain preparations are necessary depending on whether the shelf is made of wood or particleboard. I’m grateful for any suggestions!

I can definitely understand how much you want the Billy shelf to look less sterile, especially since you see it everywhere for a long time now. A while ago, I tried to brighten up my Billy shelves with paint myself, and at first, I struggled with some uncertainties, such as choosing the right type of paint and whether to sand them beforehand. After the treatment, the shelves really look much more personal, but you need to be patient. I’m wondering if there are any good recommendations for finding sustainable or non-toxic paints, since the shelf is partly in the living area.
To enhance Billy shelves, I recommend a careful preparation: First, thoroughly clean the surface from dust and grease. Then, lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper (grit 120-150) to ensure the paint adheres well. For coloring, water-based acrylic paints are suitable because they have low odor and work well on particleboard. Alternatively, self-adhesive films can be used, which are easy to cut and apply. Important: Apply several thin layers of paint and allow each to dry properly to achieve a smooth finish. Pre-treated or lacquered wood requires a different primer, usually an adhesion primer.

Hello, for enhancing the color of Billy shelves, I would recommend the following: First, lightly sand the surface with a fine abrasive pad or sandpaper to roughen the usually smooth, sealed surface. This helps the paint adhere better. Then apply a suitable primer, especially when switching from dark to light colors or vice versa. Chalk paints work particularly well because they provide a matte and very authentic look. A big advantage is that they require minimal preparation and are easy to apply. After painting, a clear varnish can be used for protection, especially on shelves that are frequently used. One tip: always ensure good ventilation while working and allow sufficient drying time between coats.

If you sand it slightly unevenly on purpose, the shelf looks very charming. You can also paint the back panels in color, which adds a lot of character. And don’t worry about the preparation—it’s actually fun and you can see your DIY project come to life. 🙂
