Hello everyone! I have been thinking for a while about how to enhance the classic IKEA Billy shelves with color without completely rebuilding them or spending a lot of money. I’m especially interested in which techniques or materials work best to make the surface more lively or personalized without compromising the shelves’ stability or functionality. Maybe someone here has experience with paint, stains, adhesive films, or something similar? I would also like to know if you have tips on how to apply paint layers cleanly and whether certain preparations are necessary depending on whether the shelf is made of wood or particleboard. I’m grateful for any suggestions!

Thank you all for the helpful tips! I’m still curious: Has anyone ever tried a combination of paint and foil? For example, painting the exterior surfaces and then covering the back panel with foil? How does that work in practice? Are there any issues applying the foil to a painted surface? And how does it interact with the protective coating? I would really appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Yes, I have done it this way. It is important that the paint is completely dry and fully cured before applying the film. On glossy or very smooth painted surfaces, the film may not adhere well. Lightly sanding the surface can help. After applying the film, use a squeegee to press it down firmly to avoid air bubbles. Clear coat should be applied only to the painted areas, not over the film, as the coat can otherwise discolor or damage the film.

This is very important to preserve the film over the long term. Additionally, it is advisable to use high-quality adhesive films with UV protection to prevent fading.

Great that you’re asking about combinations! That makes it even more exciting. 🙂 I covered my back walls with adhesive foil and painted the rest bright red – simply brilliant! Just make sure the film adheres properly to the surface and that no wrinkles form during application.

Are there any issues when applying the film if the surface is already painted?

Common pitfalls when applying film include poorly cleaned or overly smooth painted surfaces. The film might not stick properly. Tip: Lightly sanding and cleaning the surface helps. And most importantly, don’t wait too long between painting and applying the film, otherwise adhesion will be weaker.

Your input really helps me a lot with my next project, thank you! 🙂 I’m going to start now and will report back on what worked well.
