Hello everyone! I have been thinking for a while about how to enhance the classic IKEA Billy shelves with color without completely rebuilding them or spending a lot of money. I’m especially interested in which techniques or materials work best to make the surface more lively or personalized without compromising the shelves’ stability or functionality. Maybe someone here has experience with paint, stains, adhesive films, or something similar? I would also like to know if you have tips on how to apply paint layers cleanly and whether certain preparations are necessary depending on whether the shelf is made of wood or particleboard. I’m grateful for any suggestions!

On glossy or very smooth painted surfaces, the film may not adhere well. Lightly sanding the surface can help. After applying the film, use a squeegee to press it down firmly to avoid air bubbles. Clear coat should be applied only to the painted areas, not over the film, as the coat can otherwise discolor or damage the film.

Great that you’re asking about combinations! That makes it even more exciting. 🙂 I covered my back walls with adhesive foil and painted the rest bright red – simply brilliant! Just make sure the film adheres properly to the surface and that no wrinkles form during application.
