Hello everyone, I am currently considering how to equip the doors of my IKEA Pax wardrobe with a soft-close function. Are there reliable or proven solutions to retrofit Pax doors with soft-close hinges or dampers? I would appreciate tips on compatible products and advice on whether the installation can be done technically well without affecting the appearance or functionality. Thank you in advance!

Retrofit with soft-close dampers is possible. Simply attach them to the top or bottom edge of the door. Important: find the right position for slow closing. IKEA hinges with built-in soft-close are, however, more stable and have a better appearance.

Hello, I can share from my own experience that I equipped my Pax wooden doors with original IKEA soft-close hinges. The installation is relatively straightforward if you carefully follow the instructions and have some patience.

If replacing the hinges is not an option because you’re unsure how to remove or drill them, soft-close dampers for the cabinet sides are recommended. These are more affordable, but the closing action might feel a bit different—not quite as smooth as with the original hinges.

In summary:
- Original IKEA soft-close hinges fit perfectly and are durable
- External dampers are flexibly installable but sometimes less comfortable

If you have good DIY skills, replacing the hinges is the better choice. For a quick solution, dampers make sense.

I fully understand that retrofitting soft-close mechanisms on PAX doors can be a challenge for many. It is important to take enough time before starting the conversion and not to rush.

For a quick solution, dampers are useful.

That matches my experience as well. Sometimes small mistakes during the installation of soft-close dampers can cause frustration, so I recommend trying it first on a test door.

Additionally, with older PAX systems, the cabinet frame may not be perfectly designed for the dampers, which makes positioning difficult. I encountered this myself and ended up buying the original hinges.

In my opinion, for a lasting good result, the effort of replacing the hinges is worthwhile.
