Hello everyone,

I’m facing the challenge of assembling an Ikea Hemnes piece of furniture, but I want to use as little tooling as possible. The Ikea instructions usually only require the included tools or a simple Phillips screwdriver, but I’m wondering if there are any tips or tricks to simplify the assembly if you really only have minimal tools available.

I’m particularly interested in whether there are certain techniques that make it easier to connect the parts, or if the assembly steps can be rearranged in a way that helps to apply force more effectively or prevent injuries.

Has anyone had experience assembling Ikea Hemnes furniture in a similar situation and can share useful advice? I think this could be helpful for anyone who doesn’t have a full toolkit but still wants to achieve a good result.

Thanks in advance!

Hey, that sounds like a challenge, but don’t worry: with a few tricks, it will work out great! 😊

The most important thing is to stay relaxed and follow the instructions step by step. If you only have very few tools, I’d recommend at least having a good Phillips screwdriver, as it’s almost always needed.

Sometimes simple aids like a rubber mallet or a piece of carpet to assemble the furniture on can help – this protects the surface and allows you to adjust easily if something gets stuck.

Also: screw in the screws lightly at first and don’t tighten them fully right away! This way, you can adjust things better later. And yes, even if you have limited tools, taking some care when aligning the parts really makes everything easier.

Keep at it, you can do this! 💪

Very good question!

From my experience with Hemnes furniture, there are actually some technical details to consider when working with limited tools:

- Preparation: Lay out and sort all parts and fittings. This avoids long searching times and assembly errors.
- Procedure: Insert screws and dowels finger-tight first. With Hemnes, the fit can sometimes be tricky; tightening screws too much early on makes final assembly harder.
- Avoid pressure marks: Support the wooden parts with a soft cloth or rubber edge, especially if hammer blows are necessary.
- Important tip: If you only have a small screwdriver, use the back of a knife blade (careful!) or even a coin to help start screws or press them in more easily.

My question for you: Which Hemnes variant are you assembling exactly (e.g., dresser, wardrobe)? And do you have any other tools besides a screwdriver? That influences the advice.

In general: Patience is the best helper, not force.

That’s absolutely true! 😄

What I always do when assembling something with minimal tools is the following:

- One glove for better grip and hand protection.
- Instead of a screwdriver, I sometimes use a screwdriver bit and a flashlight to carefully check if the screws are properly seated.
- When assembling the panels, it helps to lay the parts on the floor, align them precisely, and hold them in place with your body weight before screwing.

Very good tip! What’s also great with Hemnes: if you “pre-tension” certain connections, meaning only partially assemble them at first, you can gradually put the whole cabinet together without a screw getting in the way.

And hey, using minimal tools might slow things down a bit, but it’s still a success. Just stay calm, read the instructions carefully, and assemble step by step!
