Hello everyone,
I’m planning to assemble an Ikea Hemnes chest of drawers soon and want to be well prepared regarding the tools needed. Since I’ve assembled several Ikea furniture pieces before, I know that good preparation is half the battle. My question is: which tools are really essential for assembling Ikea Hemnes furniture?
I’m especially interested in whether specific screwdriver types (Phillips, flathead), a cordless drill, a hammer, or perhaps special tools like Allen keys significantly ease the process. It would also be helpful to know which tools can safely be left out and whether Ikea’s included accessories are sufficient or if it’s better to supplement them with your own.
I look forward to your experiences and recommendations, especially if you have tips to make the assembly more efficient and less frustrating.

Hello everyone,
to add to the discussion: For assembling the Hemnes, I definitely recommend a medium-sized Phillips screwdriver bit (PH2) for either a screwdriver or a cordless drill. Ikea usually uses standardized screws, but sometimes there are slight size variations that can be covered with a bit set.
An Allen key (5 mm (0.2 inches) or depending on the set) is essential because of the furniture connections. The Ikea-provided tool is included but not comfortable for longer tasks, so it’s worth having an alternative.
A hammer is rarely needed, mostly only for fitting wooden dowels or assembling parts in tight spaces. Therefore, it’s not absolutely necessary. Some users also mention that a small carpet knife or utility knife is useful for opening packages, but this is unrelated to the actual assembly.
Summary:
- Phillips screwdriver – essential
- Allen key – included with Hemnes, but better to have your own
- Cordless drill – optional, speeds up the work
- Rubber mallet – optional
This covers everything needed for assembly and is practical.

Hello Digugi and everyone,
I would like to share a few additional tips from my experience, especially for those who don’t assemble furniture very often:
- Stay patient! IKEA furniture is generally well designed, but sometimes the holes and screws can be a bit tight. It’s better to use a suitable screwdriver to ensure the screws are turned in properly.
- I also find the supplied Allen key somewhat awkward to use, so I bought a small set in various sizes, which makes the work much easier.
- For the Phillips screws, I recommend using a screwdriver with an ergonomic handle. This helps reduce hand fatigue.
- A small spirit level can also be helpful to make sure the dresser is perfectly level at the end.
If you use a cordless drill, I advise always using the lowest torque setting and checking more frequently whether the connections are tight. Otherwise, you can easily damage the material.
I hope this helps!

Hey everyone!
I’m really impressed with the Ikea Hemnes series and have already assembled several pieces. My top tip: invest in good quality tools!
Personally, I love my cordless screwdriver—it makes life so much easier. Always keep a set of good-quality Phillips bits handy.
What I find interesting: the small Allen key Ikea includes is handy for quick tasks, but definitely not for longer screwing jobs—you’ll quickly tire your hand. So I recommend a comfortable Allen wrench or, even better, a ratchet set with various bits.
One more tip: tap dowels in with a rubber mallet to give the whole construction the necessary stability. Don’t give up; it will look really great in the end! 😊

I completely agree. An ergonomic Allen wrench or a ratchet set not only reduces fatigue but also significantly improves efficiency.
It’s also important to choose tools of good quality that match the screws. Cheap tools can damage the screw heads, causing problems later on.
In summary: For Hemnes furniture, a set of Phillips screwdrivers and a proper Allen key are the minimum. Supplemented by a cordless drill with adjustable torque, you’re well equipped.

[quote=Natan, post: h7c5l9, member: XXX]Basically, I believe the importance of tools largely depends on one’s experience. A cordless drill is definitely very useful, but you should be able to control its torque well.
I want to emphasize this point. Experience with a cordless drill makes a big difference. Beginners often risk over-tightening screws, which can damage the wood, especially in the Hemnes furniture.
So my advice for inexperienced users: tighten screws lightly by hand first and use the cordless drill only to assist during the initial or final assembly. Striking this balance ensures a smooth build.
Tool quality and using the “right” tools are just as important as knowing your own skills.
Therefore, it’s also a matter of craftsmanship confidence.
