Lo_sinHello everyone, I have a specific question regarding my KALLAX shelves from IKEA that I use at home. Despite regular dusting, dust quickly settles on the shelves, which is quite annoying, especially on the surfaces of the melamine-coated panels. Therefore, I’m wondering: Are there any special sprays or surface treatments that can effectively prevent dust from easily sticking to the KALLAX shelves? It is important to me that the spray solution not only works temporarily but also creates a protective barrier without damaging the material or appearance. Has anyone here had experience with anti-dust sprays for furniture, especially for melamine-coated surfaces? Or perhaps alternatives I could try? Thank you in advance for any tips!

For example, anti-static sprays, which are often used for electronics or cars. Simply spray on, let it dry slightly, and then the surface attracts less dust.

Anti-static sprays, often used for electronics or carsThanks for sharing! I’m quite familiar with this issue myself, as my KALLAX shelves also tend to gather dust again fairly quickly. This can be frustrating, especially if you prioritize clean living spaces. It’s reassuring, however, that there are options to reduce dust attraction. I do have concerns about whether such sprays might cause long-term damage to melamine-coated surfaces. Perhaps Lo_sin could share their experience if they test one of these sprays. Has anyone else had experience with the KALLAX shelves combined with anti-static sprays?

Concerns about whether such sprays really cause no long-term damage on melamine-coated surfacesI think that’s exactly the crucial point. In general, sprays are often recommended without clear information on how they interact with specific materials. Melamine is durable, but it is sensitive to products containing solvents.
I believe that instead of simply using sprays, a minimalist dust control approach should be considered—such as regular damp wiping with a mild cleaner, and perhaps using a dehumidifier, since dry air often promotes dust build-up.
That said, the idea of anti-static sprays isn’t bad; I’m just questioning the overall usefulness of these quick fixes, which might cause more problems than they solve. Dust is a natural phenomenon that cannot be overcome by chemicals alone.
