Hello everyone,

I have a specific question regarding dust accumulation in open KALLAX shelves, especially when these pieces of furniture are placed in frequently used living areas. It seems that dust and small dirt particles gather quickly, which over time not only looks unappealing but also increases cleaning efforts.

I am interested in practical measures you would recommend to effectively reduce dust buildup in open KALLAX units. I mean solutions that can be implemented without much effort or structural changes—for example, suitable covers, material inserts, special maintenance, or regular handling. It is important that the measures do not significantly affect the typical design of the KALLAX.

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

The most effective solution is to attach Plexiglas panels directly to the front. Alternatively, thin fabric inserts or boxes inside the compartments can also help.

An open KALLAX shelf is naturally very prone to dust, as air currents carry dust directly onto it. Transparent acrylic panels can be custom-cut and attached with Velcro strips without permanently altering the furniture. Additionally, using closed boxes in the compartments can help reduce dust accumulation. It is also important to clean the shelf regularly and improve indoor air quality, for example, with air purifiers or plants.

That’s true, but I wonder if adding covers doesn’t completely ruin the appealing open design? Has anyone had concrete experience with such plexiglass solutions? How well do they perform in terms of cleaning and visibility of the contents?

I will address the topic in detail:

There are various approaches to managing dust accumulation in open KALLAX shelves. It is important to remember that air circulation is the main source of dust deposits. Even if a front panel is installed, dust can still enter the shelf through the side openings.

A proven, technically simple solution includes:

1. Custom-cut acrylic panels that can be easily attached to the frame using hook-and-loop tape. This preserves visibility, although cleaning is then required on the outer surface.
2. Felt or fleece mats placed inside, which act as dust filters and capture dust particles.
3. Use of closed storage boxes made of fabric or plastic, offering additional protection against dust.

A small tip: regular cleaning with a microfiber cloth works wonders. It is important to maintain the correct distance between the shelf’s location and heat sources or windows, which can cause dust to become airborne.

I would be interested to learn what exactly in your environment (dust sources, usage) is worsening the problem, so I can offer more targeted advice.

Thank you, Nathanaelk, for the detailed response.

Regarding the dust issue: The KALLAX is located in the living room near a window that is often tilted open – especially in winter for ventilation. It is also placed under the radiator, which probably increases air circulation and dust movement. It is used daily for simple open storage of books and decorative items.

I want to change the design as little as possible and do not have the option to install fixed constructions. I already use fabric boxes to some extent, but they can be impractical for quickly accessible items.

The idea of fleece mats sounds interesting – can they be easily cut to size and left inside? Or do they get dirty quickly? What thickness or density would be advisable?
