I agree. Especially with older HEMNES furniture, where the holes have become loose due to frequent assembly and disassembly, dowel repair kits are useful.

Personally, I have had very good experience with common wood repair kits that include dowels, glue, and small milling tools. Although such tools are not officially designed for IKEA, they work very well in practice.

Regarding tools: besides the usual Allen key, I recommend a cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque to tighten screws properly without overtightening.
