Are there special screws to secure Malm furniture more safely?

I am currently assembling a few Malm dressers from Ikea in my apartment. I noticed that the original screws don’t always seem very sturdy, especially when attaching the furniture to the wall to prevent tipping.

My question is: Are there specially designed or recommended screws that work better for Malm furniture when it comes to securing it safely to the wall or floor? I mean screws that might be thicker, longer, have a specific coating, or even special anchors that better match the material.

Maybe you have experience with which screws are truly recommended and significantly improve safety? Thanks for your advice!

Also, be careful not to screw directly into the thin particleboard of the furniture,

I can only confirm that – my daughter once tried to repair a drawer herself and used screws that were actually too long and too thick. The result was that the wood split. Since then, I only use the recommended screws or get advice at the hardware store. Safety comes first with kids, especially for furniture that could tip over!

Do you have any tips on which screws are especially child-friendly—not just stable but also less likely to break or cause splitting? I want the furniture in their rooms to be secure without the risk of any accidents.

The question about special screws for Malm furniture can be answered clearly from a technical perspective: when it comes to wall mounting, the choice of suitable anchors and screws for the wall matters more than special types for the furniture itself.

Chipboard screws with coarse threads do improve the grip in the furniture, but the wall fastening is the crucial factor.

Therefore, I recommend focusing primarily on the structural support behind the wall fixing: for solid walls, 6x50mm (approximately 1/4 x 2 inches) screws with heavy-duty anchors are advisable, while for drywall, toggle or cavity anchors with longer screws (at least 6x60mm (approximately 1/4 x 2 1/2 inches)) should be used. This ensures stability.

Whether the furniture fittings are installed with original or special screws is secondary, as long as there is a system that prevents the furniture from tipping over.
