Hello everyone, I wanted to ask the group: Are there any special screwdrivers or tools needed for assembling IKEA Platsa furniture? I am planning to get this system and wonder if the screw heads or connectors require specific screwdrivers, or if regular ones from a hardware store will be sufficient. I want to be well prepared in advance and avoid buying the wrong tools that might not fit or could potentially damage the screws. Does anyone have experience with the Platsa system and can offer advice on any special requirements or recommendations?

Hi, for IKEA Platsa you don’t need any special screwdrivers. Usually, Phillips or hex screws are used, which require common tools. A standard Phillips screwdriver and a set of hex keys are completely sufficient.

Hello NE-GUNNAR, to answer your question in more detail: The IKEA Platsa system mainly uses standardized fasteners that can be assembled with common tools. Typically, these are Phillips screws as well as some hex or Allen screws, especially for fittings and connectors. It is important to pay attention to the quality of the screwdriver during assembly because IKEA uses relatively soft steel for the screws, so a properly fitting screwdriver with a well-seated blade or bit is essential to avoid stripping the screw heads. Additionally, like many IKEA products, there are metal connector bolts that require an Allen key, which is often included in the package. Finally, I would recommend having a set of precision Allen bits and a suitable screwdriver ready. Do you already have specific screwdrivers or bits you plan to use, or will you be getting everything new?

I completely understand that you don’t want to use improper tools, NE-GUNNAR. I had a similar experience when assembling my Platsa: at first, I was uncertain, especially because using screwdrivers with the wrong bits had previously damaged screw heads. It’s really reassuring to know you have the right tools and can avoid frustration. That’s why I’m all the more grateful for tips that clearly confirm standard tools are sufficient. If you feel nervous during assembly, just take it step by step—it really helps a lot!

Hello everyone, I would like to add: The Platsa system uses pretty standard connection technology at IKEA. You will mainly find Phillips screws and hex screws. The included Allen wrenches for the cam locks and dowels are usually sufficient. If someone does not have high-quality screwdrivers, I recommend better bits because Phillips heads can easily strip otherwise. This can lengthen the assembly time and cause damaged screws, which is naturally frustrating with furniture. An inexpensive bit set from a hardware store with the appropriate T15 or T20 Phillips bit is ideal. If you don’t have anything yet, I would suggest investing in a good bit set as it can be used for many purposes.

I take a pragmatic but critical view: It is often said that standard tools, especially Phillips and hex screwdrivers, are sufficient. However, I wonder if this really applies to all Platsa modules. There are occasionally special fasteners or screws that may differ – this is common with certain furniture lines. Especially when ordering spare parts or occasionally reusing components, specialized tools or at least specific bits might be necessary. Can anyone confirm from personal experience that everything works smoothly with standard tools, even for any special or replacement parts? I am skeptical before relying on this statement.
