Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat more specific question that I hope will find interest and experience here in the forum: Are there professional options for restoring yellowed KALLAX units from IKEA?

I have noticed that many KALLAX shelves tend to develop a yellowish tint or become yellowed after a few years of use due to sunlight exposure or environmental factors. The furniture often looks very aged even though there are hardly any scratches and the structure is still in great condition.

I’m interested to know if there are service providers or specialized companies that can remove this yellowing or treat it with color without damaging the original surface. Perhaps there are also special cleaning methods or refurbishment services that focus specifically on IKEA case furniture with melamine or foil surfaces.

What are your experiences? Is this even worthwhile, or can it only be solved through elaborate DIY measures or by replacing the item? I appreciate any advice!

I don’t know of any true professionals who specialize in this specifically for KALLAX. Often, people try it themselves using special cleaners or light sanding followed by painting. For melamine, there usually isn’t a straightforward preparation method.

I find that unfortunate because many KALLAX units are really well preserved, but the yellowing seriously affects the overall appearance. I have personally considered whether professional cleaning or some kind of coating might help, but so far I haven’t found any suitable service providers.

I’m also wondering how deep the yellowing actually goes – could it possibly be related to the photos or melamine surface? Do you have any guesses or experience with how the material reacts if you try to restore it?

Basically, it is important to distinguish whether the yellowing is due to surface deposits (dirt, nicotine, sunlight) or if the plastic laminate itself, usually melamine resin, has changed due to aging.

Professional furniture restorers who specialize in real wood can often help well with sanding and new paint, but with melamine, the surface often suffers significantly from sanding attempts.

I agree. Without easy sanding, it is difficult because the surface is very durable but not easy to repair.

An alternative could be tinting or spray coatings specifically designed for plastic surfaces, but this means higher costs and a visible alteration.

Who has experience with cleaners that affect UV-aged coatings? It would be interesting to know if effective products already exist – because “yellowing” is an optical reaction, not just simple dirt.

That’s exactly the point: The claim of a "professional" restoration is, in my opinion, primarily a marketing statement – after all, who would want to go through the effort of thoroughly refurbishing a melamine coating on IKEA furniture?

There are only two relevant options for surfaces: either you accept the aged appearance or you buy new.

Usually, it is a superficial effect caused by UV exposure and material aging, but the material underneath remains intact. A genuine repair of this yellowing is neither industrialized nor established as a professional service.

I suspect it simply isn’t cost-effective – this also applies to second-hand furniture. Hardly anyone invests professional time and materials into that.

I find this question very important, especially regarding sustainability and resource conservation. We shouldn’t discard furniture prematurely just because the plastic has yellowed.

I have tried mild cleaners and UV blockers myself, but the results have been rather limited.

I believe a professional solution would likely involve a combination of chemical cleaning and possibly a new coating that is UV-resistant.

I am also wondering if anyone knows of companies that specialize in restoring plastic furniture surfaces, or if it might be better to contact small furniture restoration specialists for this purpose.

Perhaps there are also innovative startups in the field of furniture recycling offering such services. I look forward to any further suggestions here.
