Hello everyone, I am planning to modify some Ikea Hemnes furniture in our home to make it more child-friendly, ensuring it is safer and more practical for young children. Specifically, I’m referring to cabinets and dressers that currently do not have any childproof features. I’m interested in how to adapt these pieces in the best way possible without significantly changing their appearance, while also avoiding tripping hazards, sharp edges, and dangerous handles. Does anyone have practical tips or recommendations on which materials and techniques work well for child-safe modifications? And what safety aspects should definitely be considered? Thanks for your experiences and advice!

The children are 2 and 4 years old, so still very active, but already able to open drawers and doors fairly independently. At this age, it is especially important not only to install mechanical locks but also to ensure a balance between usability and safety. Soft-close mechanisms, cushioned edges, and child-safe handle designs are relevant not only for protection but also to avoid frustration when children cannot open doors immediately. In my opinion, it is advisable to use mounting materials that are reversible, so the furniture can be easily returned to its original condition later without damaging the surface. Are you planning to possibly resell the furniture after the modifications or do you intend to alter it permanently?

Are you planning to resell the furniture after the modifications, or do you want to make permanent changes?I would ideally like to modify the furniture in a way that allows them to be easily restored later. Permanent alterations involving significant changes would be less ideal, as we might want to pass the furniture on after a few years. Therefore, I am particularly interested in add-on parts, assembly aids, or systems that can be attached and detached.
For the permanent modification of Ikea Hemnes furniture, I recommend a modular approach: - Use edge protectors made of flexible plastic that can be attached with double-sided tape, allowing for residue-free removal. - For handles: replacement plastic handles with rounded shapes and shallow profiles provide protection. There are also child-friendly handle covers that can be slipped over existing handles. - Drawer locks with a clamping mechanism can be installed without screws and removed without leaving marks. - For tip-over protection, use the original wall mounts from Ikea, which are discreet and standardized. An important safety measure is to regularly check the fastenings and locks for durability, especially on frequently used furniture. This way, you can protect children without significantly altering or permanently damaging the furniture design.
Additionally, the furniture can be covered with wipeable protective films to prevent scratches and make the surfaces more child-friendly. Films with a matte finish are suitable, as they preserve the texture and are easy to clean. Furthermore, these films can usually be removed without leaving any residue.

Especially on smooth floors, mats or anti-slip pads can prevent tipping and sliding, which significantly improves safety. Furthermore, when selecting handles, I recommend paying attention to potential harmful substances, such as choosing BPA-free and toxin-tested options, to minimize health risks for children. If desired, I can also provide specific product recommendations that meet these criteria.
