ᐅ IKEA Malm Furniture Painted Scratches – How to Conceal Them?

Hello everyone,

I have a small issue with one of my IKEA Malm furniture pieces. It concerns the painted surfaces, specifically the dresser with a white painted finish. Unfortunately, after some use, scratches appeared quite quickly, which bother me a lot – mainly because they are very noticeable and affect the smooth, glossy finish. My question is: What are the best methods or products to conceal these scratches as unobtrusively as possible?

I have thought about repainting them, but I’m unsure whether this is easy and effective without the color looking different or the surface becoming blotchy.

Does anyone have practical tips, special touch-up pens, waxes, or other tricks to make these paint scratches on IKEA Malm furniture as invisible as possible? Are there alternative methods that don’t require complete repainting? I would like to preserve the original appearance as much as possible.

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Thanks in advance.

I would definitely recommend furniture repair kits, as they are designed for painted surfaces. There are often matching colors available for IKEA furniture as well.

On bare lacquer, I would always lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper first before doing any touch-ups.

Try using special furniture markers or touch-up paint pens in white. IKEA often carries these repair pens, or you can find similar shades at a hardware store.

Clean the scratches with alcohol beforehand, then carefully apply the paint and allow it to dry.

Thanks for the tip, I hadn’t considered a repair kit before. I’m just wondering how large the container or kit needs to be to reasonably cover a chest of drawers? And how well does the finish adhere to such a smooth, fairly glossy surface? Is it more matte or shiny?

For bigger scratches, I would carefully use touch-up markers but apply them in thin, patient layers. Otherwise, it can quickly look uneven.

That sounds sensible; I actually planned to be that patient. I just don’t want the color to end up noticeably lighter or darker.

Does anyone have experience measuring the gloss level before applying the finish? Or is matching the color enough? Has anyone ever used this kind of repair paint on Malm furniture and can assess the surface appearance under lighting afterward?

For the professional repair of scratches on painted furniture surfaces, it is recommended to use a specially matched furniture repair marker that corresponds both in color and gloss level to the original finish.

Most furniture repair kits include various shades and gloss levels (matte, satin, glossy). Before application, the surface should be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol or a mild solvent to remove grease or dirt. Sanding is only necessary for deeper scratches to improve adhesion.

There is no reliable method for determining the exact color tone at home; often, testing small samples and evaluating the color in natural daylight helps. When painting, applying several thin layers with drying time in between is recommended to achieve an even result and minimize color differences.

Ikea Malm furniture with white painted surfaces often uses satin finish paint, which should be taken into account when selecting products.

Exactly, I tried that myself back then and even checked the paint under different lighting conditions! Be patient, painting is really enjoyable when you see the final result. And remember, every tiny scratch becomes less visible, and your desk will look like new again! 🙂
