Good morning everyone,

I am currently assembling an Ikea Pax wardrobe and have come across the issue of drilling. Since the carcass is made of thin particleboard, I am concerned about how to drill precise and clean holes, especially when it comes to mounting additional fittings or making adjustments.

I am therefore interested to know if there are any professionals or experienced users here who have practical tips or proven techniques for drilling into Pax wardrobe components. Ideally, something that does not damage the material, prevents tearing out, and allows for accurate work. Tips on suitable drill bits, procedures, or helpful tools would also be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to your insights and advice!

Yes, painter’s tape improves adhesion to the surface and prevents fibers from tearing. Applying it once is usually enough as long as it is applied tightly. Simply smooth it out before drilling.

A brief tutorial on drilling for Ikea Pax:

1. Preparation: Tape the drilling area with painter’s tape to protect the particleboard from splintering.
2. Drill bit selection: Use a sharp wood drill bit with a centering tip, about 1-2 mm (0.04-0.08 inches) smaller than the diameter of the dowel or screw.
3. Drilling depth: Use a depth stop, usually 13 or 15 mm (0.5 or 0.6 inches) works well for Ikea Pax.
4. Drilling technique: Drill at low speed with light pressure—do not force.
5. Support: Place a piece of wood behind the panel as backing to prevent chipping.

Summary: Simple measures like tape and the right drill bit avoid common mistakes and ensure a reliable assembly.

How exactly does that work? Does it really prevent the chip-out of the particleboard material?

I find the painter’s tape trick a bit too cautious. I prefer drilling without tape, relying on a sharp drill bit and precise handling. With too much assistance, you quickly become a slave to your tools instead of mastering them.

Sometimes less interference is better for flexibility.

True, but especially with delicate materials like PAX, assistance such as tape acts as a simple safeguard. Not everyone drills on a daily basis, and this can save a lot of trouble.
