Good morning everyone,

I am currently assembling an Ikea Pax wardrobe and have come across the issue of drilling. Since the carcass is made of thin particleboard, I am concerned about how to drill precise and clean holes, especially when it comes to mounting additional fittings or making adjustments.

I am therefore interested to know if there are any professionals or experienced users here who have practical tips or proven techniques for drilling into Pax wardrobe components. Ideally, something that does not damage the material, prevents tearing out, and allows for accurate work. Tips on suitable drill bits, procedures, or helpful tools would also be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to your insights and advice!

I would recommend always using a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the screw. Pre-drill the holes to prevent the wood from splitting. Additionally, a drill stand or a guide jig can help to ensure straight holes.

Short and structured:

- Drill bits: Sharp wood drill bits with a centering tip are recommended, such as Forstner bits or twist drill bits with fine threads.
- Speed: Set the drill to a low speed to prevent splintering.
- Support: When working with thin chipboard, always support the back side with an appropriate piece of wood.
- Aids: Push pins or painter’s tape can be used as drilling aids to prevent slipping.

A common mistake is starting directly with a drill bit that is too large, which easily causes material tear-out.

Exactly! Here’s an extra tip from me: Apply painter’s tape over the drilling spot. It protects more than just the surface – your frame and your nerves will thank you too 😉

In addition to the previous posts: The drilling depth is especially important when it comes to fittings. Ikea PAX often uses 5 mm (0.2 inch) holes for dowels and fittings. The correct depth plus a few millimeters (inches) of clearance is crucial to ensure stability and avoid damaging the back panel.

Tip: Use a drill stop or set the depth on the drill press. I also recommend drilling straight vertically rather than at an angle to avoid misaligning the pre-drilled mounting points.

I understand the idea behind using painter’s tape. How exactly does it work? Does it really prevent the chip-out of the particle board material? Do I only need to apply it once, or should it be reinforced multiple times?
