ᐅ Are there Ikea PLATSA furniture units with an open design?

Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into the Ikea Platsa furniture system and wondering if there are options that allow for an open design, meaning without closed doors or back panels, where shelves or individual modules can be used openly.

My goal is to remain as flexible as possible, to store books, decorations, or electronic devices visibly and accessibly, without everything being hidden behind doors.

Are there such open solutions within the PLATSA system, or are the individual modules generally designed to be closed? Maybe someone already has practical experience with open shelving parts or can offer tips on how to use PLATSA for an open layout.

Thanks in advance!

How stable are the modules without back panels? Do you need to be careful or take special measures?

The stability decreases noticeably without a back panel. Wall mounting or combining multiple modules significantly improves stability. Without any fixing, the models tend to be quite unstable.

In summary:

Ikea Platsa is designed so that the modules can also be configured as open units since the main frames can be used without doors and back panels.

- Open shelving units are created by omitting doors and back panels.
- Stability depends on the size and number of modules; for large systems, wall mounting is strongly recommended.
- The modular design allows for direct combination of open and closed sections.

Those seeking a clearly open design can use the open frames and stabilize them sufficiently by securing them to the wall. This makes PLATSA a flexible furniture system that supports both open and closed configurations.
