Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into the Ikea Platsa furniture system and wondering if there are options that allow for an open design, meaning without closed doors or back panels, where shelves or individual modules can be used openly.
My goal is to remain as flexible as possible, to store books, decorations, or electronic devices visibly and accessibly, without everything being hidden behind doors.
Are there such open solutions within the PLATSA system, or are the individual modules generally designed to be closed? Maybe someone already has practical experience with open shelving parts or can offer tips on how to use PLATSA for an open layout.
Thanks in advance!

Regarding open design with Ikea PLATSA:
- The basic modules are designed to be used without doors and back panels.
- There are individual shelves (boxes) that remain open and are clearly visible.
- Doors, drawers, or flaps can be installed optionally; these are interchangeable.
- Some back panels can be removed or left out entirely if stability and installation allow.
For a fully open design, it is recommended to specifically choose open boxes and, if necessary, replace or omit the back panels. This way, flexibility is maintained.

PLATSA offers individual modules that can be designed openly, such as open shelving units.Thank you for this information. Is there specifically a type of "open shelving unit" available as a single module, or are these more like basic frames into which other elements like doors or back panels can be inserted?

I want to avoid the furniture being too wobbly when arranged as open units.
I’m happy to explain in more detail:
PLATSA is a modular system made up of frames that usually come with back panels and doors. However, there are also open frames that you can use as they are. Stability without a back panel can be somewhat lower, depending on the size. It is recommended to fix the modules to the wall using brackets to prevent wobbling.
If you are looking for completely open shelving, you can remove the back panels or not install them at all, but you should ensure the structure is well supported in that case. This usually works well when combining multiple modules that are securely screwed together.
If you are not very familiar with PLATSA yet, you can also combine it with individual open boxes offered by IKEA to gain more flexibility.
