Hello everyone, I have a specific question regarding the Ikea PAX wardrobe system. Are the PAX wardrobes only available in the standard sizes, meaning the common widths, heights, and depths, or are there options to get PAX wardrobes in custom sizes that fall outside the standard range? I am particularly interested in whether Ikea itself offers custom-made units or if third-party suppliers need to be used to achieve PAX units with unusual widths or depths. I would appreciate a detailed explanation of the standard dimensions, as well as any information about flexibility and alternatives with the PAX system.

Hey Pomopi! That’s a good question you asked. 😉 Ikea PAX is actually quite a modular system, but when it comes to dimensions, they stick pretty strictly to their standard sizes. Custom sizes directly from Ikea? Officially, that doesn’t exist – at least I’ve never heard of it. If you really want something custom, you usually have to go to external suppliers or a carpenter who can build something tailored within PAX-like designs. But I’d say this: the standard sizes have the advantage that everything remains flexible and accessories fit properly. If you go for custom options, you lose exactly those benefits. It’s not a bad idea, sometimes even better, to adapt a bit. 😊

Hello Pomopi, I can add to this based on experience. Ikea offers the PAX system with clearly defined dimensions – widths are mostly available in 50, 75, and 100 cm (20, 30, and 39 inches), depths mainly come in 35 and 58 cm (14 and 23 inches). Heights range between 201 and 236 cm (79 and 93 inches). Custom-made options in the traditional sense, such as individual depths or intermediate sizes, are not offered by Ikea. This is also because the cabinet modules and interior fittings are designed to match these dimensions. If in doubt, the following approach helps: check your room measurements, then select standard sizes and use accessories to make the best use of the space. For truly unusual dimensions, only custom carpentry or external specialist providers remain an option.

Thank you for the initial feedback. I am also interested to know whether the standard Pax model offers any options to adjust the dimensions through self-assembly or modular combinations such as intermediate panels or shelves, to achieve less common widths. For example, 65 cm (26 inches) instead of 50 or 75 cm (20 or 30 inches) widths. Or if there are any tricks within the system that can be used to economically accommodate less typical room layouts?

I find this question interesting because it provides a good insight into the standardization of Ikea PAX – the dimensional guidelines are, of course, based on production and warehouse logistics. However, I think it is unlikely that Ikea will officially offer custom sizes, as it would hardly be economically viable. It also creates a sort of constraint that forces customers into a certain mindset: "Take what’s available or leave it." This stifles creativity. So why bother dealing with custom sizes at all? It’s better to work with suitable standard units or adapt on your own, rather than focusing on PAX for custom dimensions. After all, there are plenty of other systems available.

PAX is only available in standard sizes from Ikea. Custom dimensions need to be made by a carpenter or third-party suppliers. PAX is not designed for individual depth or width adjustments.
