Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a new wardrobe system for my bedroom and have been particularly considering the Ikea Pax wardrobes. I am wondering if there are any Pax wardrobe models that come standard with soft-close doors, or if this feature can only be achieved through additional accessories.

I am especially interested in:
- Are soft-close doors offered as standard on the Pax wardrobes?
- If not, does Ikea provide official add-on options for soft-close mechanisms?
- Based on experience, are retrofittable soft-close systems for Pax recommended and easy to install?

I would appreciate a detailed assessment, perhaps also addressing different door types (hinged doors, folding doors, sliding doors) within the Pax system.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello Jaeltau,

Regarding your question: Ikea does not offer a factory-installed soft-close system for the Pax cabinets’ doors, neither for hinged nor for sliding doors. The doors come standard with a basic closing mechanism without damping.

To my knowledge, official Ikea accessories that add a soft-close function are not available for Pax. Ikea tends to focus on standard fittings in this case.

For retrofitting:
- There are various soft-close clips and dampers on the market that can be added to the hinges afterward.
- These are generally universal and compatible with Ikea doors.
- Installation requires some DIY skills, including door removal and hinge adjustment.

Ultimately, the choice also depends on the door type. Sliding doors usually have their own damping system, but at Ikea this is generally more of a shock absorber rather than a true soft-close mechanism.

I recommend carefully checking the door descriptions before purchase and considering the option to add soft-close units yourself. If possible, consulting directly at the Ikea store can also help, as they have the latest product specifications.

I hope this helps.

Ikea does not offer a built-in soft-close system for the doors on the Pax wardrobes

That’s true—I initially hoped that the doors on my Pax wardrobe would have soft-close, but unfortunately, they don’t.

Thankfully, there are great upgrade options available that you can retrofit. My tip: buy soft-close hinges or soft-close clips that you simply insert into the existing hinges. This feels almost as good as having an original built-in soft-close.

Of course, it’s not Ikea’s official solution, but functionally it solves the problem.

And honestly: slamming cabinet doors are annoying over time 🙂 So it’s definitely worth investing a few dollars and a bit of DIY effort!

whether Ikea Pax wardrobes come with soft-close doors as a standard feature, or if this function can only be added later with accessories

I find it somewhat surprising that Ikea doesn’t offer integrated soft-close doors for such a popular wardrobe system like Pax. Especially at that price range, this feature could be a real unique selling point.

Perhaps it’s because Pax aims to remain as flexible as possible due to the wide range of modular options, and soft-close is seen more as a luxury feature that not every customer necessarily wants or needs.

So, if you really want soft-close, you’ll probably have to install it yourself. Comparable wardrobes with this feature as standard are available elsewhere – Ikea likely relies on their price advantage.

I’d be interested to hear how other users feel about this: Is soft-close really that important for wardrobes, or is it more of a "nice to have"? Personally, I think once you get used to it, it makes the living experience noticeably more pleasant.

Short answer: No, Ikea Pax does not come with soft-close doors as standard.

However, you can easily retrofit soft-close dampers. Installation is simple, and there are many guides available.

Sliding doors don’t have true soft-close features but usually include built-in dampening.

If you want quiet closing, retrofitting is the way to go.
