Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into the Ikea Pax wardrobe and seeking more detailed information regarding the stability of the shelves. My question is: Within the Ikea Pax system, are there specific types of shelves that are particularly sturdy or better suited for heavy loads? I want to use the furniture as long as possible and be able to store heavier items like thick books or electronic devices without the shelves sagging or getting damaged.

Standard particleboard shelves often seem quite thin, especially when they are wide – so I am wondering if there are alternative options, such as shelves made from more durable materials, with reinforcements or additional supports. It would be great if someone could share experiences or well-founded tips. Thanks!

Great topic! I also had a 100 cm (39 inches) wide Pax wardrobe where the shelves kept sagging – extremely annoying!

Back then, I installed reinforced MDF shelves with a thickness of 22 mm (7/8 inch) and added metal brackets underneath the shelves. Since then, everything has been rock solid with no wobbling or sagging.

Standard shelves simply aren’t strong enough for shelves that wide.

If you want it really stable, don’t skimp and retrofit it yourself. It’s definitely worth it!

If you have any questions, I’m happy to share sources for MDF shelves and suitable reinforcements.
