Hello everyone,
I am currently setting up my new apartment and am considering using the IKEA Platsa system. The furniture itself is practical and flexible, but I find the look quite plain and sometimes a bit ordinary. My question to the community is:

Are there any claddings, coverings, or other modular upgrades specifically for the IKEA Platsa system that enhance the appearance without significantly reducing flexibility or storage space? I would like to know if anyone has experience or recommendations regarding additional fronts, vinyl wraps, metal frames, or similar solutions that can transform the somewhat boxy design into a more elegant or personalized look.

I’m especially interested in options that are easy to install and can be removed cleanly if needed, as I might move in the future or use the system elsewhere.

Looking forward to your suggestions!

There are actually many ways to visually enhance PLATSA:
- Replace the fronts with painted or veneered versions
- Use self-adhesive films for the surface
- Add metal frames or feet commonly used in furniture making

This is usually reversible, making it a good solution.

Interesting question! It is important to maintain a balance between design and functionality. There are various third-party providers offering custom fronts or claddings, but you need to carefully check whether these are truly compatible with the distinctive PLATSA mechanics and load capacity.

You should also consider that overly bulky claddings can limit the original modularity, which is a unique feature of PLATSA.

A good tip: instead of full coverings, opt for subtle details like recessed handles or frame profiles. This improves the look while preserving the practical character.

For those willing to do some DIY, experimenting with high-quality paint finishes or even professional powder coating—at least on the metal parts—can keep flexibility intact while giving a more premium appearance.

This is a very important point. PLATSA stands out due to its systematic modular grid and specific assembly method. Unverified claddings or additional fronts can not only disrupt the flush lines but may also affect the hinges and insulation.

The following approaches have proven practical based on my experience with various renovation projects:

- Wrapping: High-quality adhesive films in wood patterns, either matte or glossy, can be easily applied much like with kitchen cabinets and can be removed without residue if needed. This method requires no drilling and does not affect the interior structure.

- Frame profiles made of aluminum or wooden strips: These are attached to the outer edge and give PLATSA more definition. Important: the profile depth should be matched precisely to ensure the doors close properly.

- Custom-made fronts: Some workshops offer precisely fitting fronts made of MDF or solid wood. This requires accurate measurements and usually hinge adjustments.

An additional challenge is the internal plug-in connections and retaining clips that provide stability—claddings often alter the dynamic behavior of the assembly here.

My recommendation: Always create a test unit before making major modifications. It is also crucial to keep the intended use in mind. Do you want flexible redesign options or a fixed, high-quality appearance?

Are you looking to upgrade individual modules (e.g., only tall cabinets), or are you aiming for a complete system?
