Are there common assembly mistakes that frequently occur when building the IKEA Hemnes? I recently assembled the furniture myself and noticed that some parts can be quite tricky, especially if you’re not aware of the typical errors beforehand. I’m interested to know if others have experienced specific problems during the assembly and which mistakes happen most often. Maybe it’s misalignments of the side panels or issues with securing the back panel? I would appreciate concrete advice or tips that can help during the build to avoid these mistakes from the start.

Hey, good point! 😄 With the Hemnes, I’ve noticed that many people have trouble with the correct alignment of the parts – especially the back panel, which is often installed crookedly, making the whole wardrobe feel a bit unstable. Sometimes people also forget to fully insert the wooden dowels, which can cause wobbling later on. And yes, just like you said, the screws on the side panels need to be properly tightened, or there will be problems down the line. My advice: work slowly and patiently, and even the tricky Hemnes becomes enjoyable.

I can fully understand how frustrating building something like this can be. I also found that sometimes parts get mixed up—there are many similar boards in the Hemnes range, and if you’re not careful, things suddenly don’t fit together properly anymore. It’s important not to put yourself under pressure and to take another close look at the instructions. The tip to lay out all the parts in an organized way before starting also helped me a lot. Did you notice any particular steps where the instructions seemed especially unrealistic or poorly explained?

Good question, I think! I especially noticed that the instructions for fitting the door hinges were quite brief. If the hinges are not installed precisely, the cabinet can easily become warped or the doors may not close properly. The back panel is basically straightforward, but if the nails are hammered in at an angle, the entire frame becomes unstable. It would have been helpful if IKEA had provided more detailed guidance here to really prevent common assembly mistakes. What has been your experience with this?

The observation is correct. With the Hemnes system, it is indeed common that hinge positioning leads to installation errors if the holes are not drilled precisely. A frequent mistake is not drilling the hinge holes exactly perpendicular and at the correct distance, which then requires extra work to adjust the alignment. Additionally, I have noticed that the back panel is often fixed too early, before the frame is fully aligned – this causes stress and can lead to problems later on. My advice: before attaching the back panel, make sure all side panels are properly aligned and square.

As an addition: After thorough examination and several assembly attempts, I can identify the following common installation errors with the IKEA Hemnes:

- Inaccurate alignment of the side panels, which affects stability and the final shape
- Improper attachment of the back panel, particularly nailing it too early before the frame is fully aligned
- Confusing similar wooden parts, negatively impacting the fit
- Incomplete or incorrect screwing and insertion of wooden dowels, resulting in a wobbly piece of furniture
- Hinge installation without precise measurements, causing gap issues with the doors

These errors occur more frequently than average. I recommend carefully sorting all individual parts before starting assembly and thoroughly studying the instructions. This way, most problems can be avoided.
