Gemin70Hello everyone, I am currently planning the setup of my new bedroom, which is unfortunately very tight on space. Since I want to create as much storage as possible, I am considering an IKEA PAX wardrobe. However, I find the planning somewhat challenging, especially because the room is very narrow and not particularly tall. Therefore, my question to the community is: Are there any helpful tips or proven strategies for planning the IKEA PAX in such cramped rooms so that it fits well and at the same time truly maximizes the available storage? What experience do you have regarding depth, width, height, and interior organization in small rooms? I am also interested in any tricks for making the wardrobe comfortably usable despite the spatial limitations. Thank you in advance for your help!
I would always make full use of the maximum height to gain storage space. In tight rooms, a narrower depth of 35 cm (14 inches) is recommended when there is limited space in front. Sliding doors are often practical here because they do not require additional clearance for opening.
Regarding PAX in small rooms: It is essential to take exact room measurements and consider door openings before planning. For tight spaces, I recommend PAX systems with a depth of 35 cm (14 inches) instead of the standard 58 cm (23 inches), as they take up less space but still provide sufficient storage. Additionally, choosing sliding doors is practical because they save space when opening. For the interior layout, I suggest flexible shelves and adjustable clothes rails so the wardrobe can be adapted to changes. Important: Installation can be somewhat more complex at the maximum height, so it may be sensible to build the wardrobe in several segments that can be transported and assembled individually. Also, by cleverly integrating accessories such as drawers or boxes, the space is utilized very efficiently.
Oh, how cool, planning a PAX wardrobe in tight spaces is really fun! 😄 Especially when space is limited, you can achieve great results with clever ideas! A tip from me: use light colors and maybe mirrors on the doors, as this makes the room appear visually larger! And don’t be afraid to vary the interior layout boldly to fit everything in. With sliding doors, you already have a huge advantage! 🙂 Don’t get discouraged, it will turn out great!
If the ceiling height is limited, you can also consider half-height cabinets built on top of dressers or shelves. This increases flexibility and allows you to use the space differently. It is also advisable to plan ahead with the Ikea PAX planner, which helps with precise customization.

And here’s another idea: If you place the PAX against just one wall, try positioning it parallel to the bed or table instead of always putting it directly in the corner. This makes the room feel a bit more open. Also, if you skip the cabinet legs and use a plinth base instead, the room gains floor clearance, making it easier to clean. Small but smart details that make a difference 😉.
