Hello everyone, I’m currently looking into the Ikea Hemnes and considering how to customize this simple piece of furniture with minimal effort and without major DIY modifications. I’m especially interested in ideas that don’t require complex alterations or expensive specialty materials, but rather small details or easy techniques that anyone can apply without a large workshop or professional tools. Maybe you have suggestions from your own experience on how to enhance Hemnes dressers or cabinets to give them a personal touch? Which minor changes are really worthwhile, and what are your thoughts on options like custom painting, changing handles, or adding small decorations? I look forward to your ideas!

Thanks for the suggestions so far! I’m mainly focusing on small changes that don’t require much material or tools. That’s why I find ideas like changing handles and applying paint very suitable. But I’m wondering: what about replacing knobs with leather straps or fabric ribbons? Would that work as a long-term solution for handles, or is it rather impractical?

I hadn’t thought about protective varnish yet – I assume that’s especially important when using paints, right?

Tip: Always clean thoroughly and lightly sand, otherwise nothing will hold properly.

Could you maybe explain how fine the sanding should be when working with chalk paint? And roughly how much time should be planned for such a small painting and preparation task?

Regarding leather tabs as handles: They work well if securely attached. However, over time they can be somewhat delicate, depending on how often the drawers are used.

A protective lacquer should always be applied if you want to keep the color looking fresh for longer. Otherwise, the appearance can quickly be affected by scratches and stains.

I can only agree with the others—changing handles is really the secret weapon for a quick makeover. If you choose leather or fabric, the question is: How often will you be touching the furniture piece? Leather offers a nice, warm feel but isn’t as durable as metal.

Regarding color and protection: A light wax finish can often be applied faster than paint and gives a nice, soft matte effect. It’s also more environmentally friendly, if that matters to you.

And don’t worry, for preparation, fine sandpaper (grit 220) is completely sufficient. After sanding, just wipe with a damp cloth, and then you can start painting. Usually, the whole process, including drying times, takes about a weekend. Easy!

Good luck personalizing—it’s really fun!
