Today we walked through a residential area with single-family homes that is about 20 years old. We noticed many roofs that were heavily soiled and covered with moss. This is especially noticeable on red roofs. We also want a red roof, preferably a natural red color. However, I really don’t like those highly glossy roofs. Are roof tiles today more resistant to dirt? What should you consider when choosing a roof? Best regards, Steffi33.

In general, concrete roof tiles are more prone to moss growth than clay roof tiles. Regardless, in my opinion, external factors (shade, weather, trees, etc.) are more important than the tiles themselves.

What you actually put on the roof is, in my opinion, completely irrelevant; it’s mainly a matter of appearance and personal taste. Concrete tiles usually come with a 20-year warranty, so what could possibly go wrong?

Make sure you receive the correct color and finish.

The glossier the surface, the less moss will grow – but I would also believe that trees and shade have the greatest impact on the exterior appearance.

The color red no longer looks good on older roofs. Red cars without metallic paint or red patio umbrellas also suffer from UV damage.
I would have loved to have a red roof, but my husband was firmly against it, so we had to agree on a different color.

I don’t think that applies so generally. My parents’ red roof still looks great after 15 years. Of course, it’s not very old yet, but I often see attractive red roofs that are probably even older.

Unfortunately, I can't say. In a new housing development nearby, the houses have been standing for almost 10 years, and they no longer look nice. There are also two houses with red roofs on the street. These roofs are no longer in good condition either.

However, I do know a house with blue, high-gloss concrete roof tiles that still look as if they were just newly installed even after 10 years.
