Are Ikea Platsa furniture pieces designed to be child-friendly?

I am currently considering furnishing a child’s room and have been looking at the PLATSA series from Ikea because it seems flexible due to its modular design. For me, it is important to know whether these furniture pieces are truly developed with children in mind. That means not just whether they look suitable for a child’s room, but whether they are adapted to children in terms of safety, stability, edges, materials, and potential injury risks.

I am also interested in whether there are special features like childproof locks, non-slip feet, or rounded edges. Or if the series is designed to withstand playful use of the furniture by children.

Besides safety, it would also be useful to know how practical the furniture is for children in everyday use—for example, ease of opening doors and drawers, durable materials resistant to scratches, or typical accident risks.

So, do you have any experiences or information about whether Ikea PLATSA furniture is considered child-friendly or how it has worked out specifically in your child’s room?

The Ikea PLATSA series is designed for modularity and customization, which can be generally beneficial for children's rooms as the furniture can be adapted to individual needs. Regarding child safety, Ikea states that the furniture has been tested to meet EU safety standards.

However, PLATSA does not include specific childproof features such as baby locks or rounded edges. The edges are not sharp, but they are not specially rounded either. The material is sturdy, and the surface is often melamine-coated, making it scratch-resistant; however, heavy use and rough play can still cause wear.

It is important that heavy components are anchored to the wall, as recommended by Ikea in the instructions, especially in households with small children. Non-slip feet are not included as standard.

In summary: stable and safe according to standards, but without special child-friendly features. Additional safety accessories (e.g., door locks) can be purchased separately.

I think this is very important to mention because many people underestimate how much emphasis Ikea generally places on safety. As a parent, I have found that while this furniture is not specifically designed to be "child-friendly," it is well thought out and sturdy enough to withstand little adventures—provided everything is properly secured.

For example, I had a storage shelving system from that series for my son, and although it certainly didn’t have childproof locks, we used simple solutions like handle covers and door stoppers.

However, one should definitely not assume that these wood furniture modules are completely child-safe, but rather that they are stable enough when correctly installed. This also gives me peace of mind as a parent, even though I take additional precautions.

I really like the PLATSA series for kids’ rooms! 🙂 It’s flexible, practical, and grows with the children.

Regarding child-friendly design, it’s not specifically made for kids’ rooms, but we haven’t noticed any safety issues in our home. We added foam edge protectors, which work great to prevent bumps.

A big advantage is that you can customize shelves, cabinets, and storage units according to your needs. The doors and drawers operate smoothly, which is especially helpful for younger children.

So definitely recommended if you’re looking for something flexible and adaptable and are willing to add a few safety extras yourself. 🙂

whether the series was designed to withstand playful handling of furniture by children.

From a technical perspective, the PLATSA series can withstand normal playful use by children, provided that assembly follows the instructions and all fastenings for shelves or cabinets are secured to the wall. The materials and finishes used are durable and easy to maintain.

This is indeed crucial for safety. Additionally, child-friendliness can be enhanced with accessories such as corner protectors or door locks.

Rounded edges are not part of the design, which should be considered with younger children. For older children from about 6 to 7 years old, I consider the furniture practical and safe.

For babies or toddlers, additional measures should be taken or alternative furniture concepts considered.

Thank you for the clarification; that was important for me to know. Especially regarding rounded edges, I had hoped the furniture would be designed to be safer.

That’s a good tip! Has anyone had experience with whether the additional edge protection interferes with the use of doors and drawers?

I’m also interested to know if others have had accidental injuries with PLATSA furniture in children’s rooms, or if everything has generally been safe.

In addition to safety, I would like to know how durable this furniture is with children – does it withstand rough use for more than a few years?
