TinabuHello everyone,
I am planning to build a kitchen myself and am currently looking for modules suitable for DIY assembly – in the process, I came across the IKEA Metod kitchen system. My question is for anyone who might have experience with it: Are IKEA Metod kitchens generally suitable for self-assembly by people without any prior woodworking or DIY experience?
I want to understand how complex the installation is, whether the instructions are easy to follow, and what common pitfalls there might be. I’m also interested in whether the quality of the parts justifies the effort, or if it might be better to choose something else if you have never built furniture yourself before.
I would appreciate detailed experiences and practical tips, preferably including advice on time requirements, tools needed, and typical challenges during assembly. Thanks in advance!

I have assembled two Metod kitchens myself. It is doable for complete beginners if you are patient. The instructions are clear, but having the right tools is essential (drill, screwdriver, spirit level).
Potential pitfalls:
- Adjusting the hinges properly takes time
- The fronts need to be aligned very precisely
Conclusion: Not rocket science, but take your time.

The manual is fairly detailed but assumes you have basic DIY skills – for example, installing wall plugs, aligning cabinets, and handling mounting hardware precisely.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Before installation, make sure to familiarize yourself very carefully with the measurements, especially the exact positioning of water and electrical connections.
- The individual modules are often quite heavy, which can be challenging for someone without experience to handle alone.
- Installing the countertop requires precision, and depending on the material, may require special tools.
In terms of quality, Metod cabinets are solid for the price, which in my view justifies the effort. Alternative systems often have more complicated assembly methods or less detailed instructions. For absolute beginners, I recommend watching videos beforehand or asking someone with basic knowledge for help.

The answer depends on how one defines ‘DIY experience’ and to what extent one can independently find solutions when problems arise.
On one hand, the mechanical complexity of Metod is manageable – overall, it consists of fitting and screw connections that require precision and care for proper assembly. Anyone who has never held a drill should at least practice with simple building projects first.
On the other hand, assembly can be complicated by the often bulky sizes of the modules and the special parts that the instructions assume as “standard.” Mistakes can become costly later if, for example, dowels are incorrectly placed or the overall measurements are off.
I would also question whether one has enough time and patience to carefully approach each phase – those who get frustrated quickly at the first difficulties may be disappointed.
Conclusion:
- For completely inexperienced individuals, assembly is an ambitious project but not impossible.
- It’s worthwhile to invest time in preparation, studying the manual, and obtaining the right tools.
- If anything is lacking, getting expert help briefly or watching several assembly videos often leads to clear improvements.
Without thorough preparation, it’s easy to reach the limits. Even though many swear that Metod is “child’s play,” this should not be taken for granted.
